Introduction to Scientific Methods and Writing

MET2000
This course provides a basic introduction to processes of scietific research, requirements for the structure and content of a bachelor thesis, collection and critical use of sources, as well as collecting, presenting and analyzing quantitative data for use in a bachelor thesis.

For students admitted to the following programmes at Nord:

Bachelor in Aquaculture Management

Bachelor in Nature Management

Bachelor in Animal Nursing

Bachelor in Animal Husbandry

Knowledge:

  • Have knowledge about the steps of a research process, from problem locating to report writing.
  • Have knowledge on the structure of and formal requirements for a Bachelor thesis / report.
  • Have knowledge on searching for and using relevant literature for Bachelor thesis / report.
  • Have knowledge on common quantitative studies and simple data analyses.
  • Has knowledge on data processing and statistical analysis of data collected by yourself.

Skills:

  • Can formulate questions for a project in your field.
  • Can use digital tools in quantitative analyses.
  • Can interpret quantitative data.
  • Can find relevant academic literature.
  • Can design and write well-structured reports.

General Competence:

  • Can design simple reports based on your own research or literature search.
  • Can find and reflect critically upon your own choice of literature of a given topic.
  • Can describe and conclude from simple a quantitative data set using descriptive and conclusive statistical methods.
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Compulsory
Lectures in real life and online. Continuous work with the portfolio and assignments according to the learning outcomes of the course.
Evaluation using mid-term and semesterly surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the national quality surveys.

Compound assessment, grading scale Passed / Not Passed

  • Compulsory work - assignments and quizzes, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Compulsory participation - minimum 70% of all gatherings, Approved / Not approved.
  • Home examination - multiple choice test, 1 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Passed / Not Passed.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
