Composing, Arranging and Improvisation, Part 1

MUS1056
This course should help students expand their musical-theoretical knowledge base and familiarise them with different forms of creative musical work. By testing different approaches to creative musical work and theory (notation, intervals, chords, scales, etc.), the student will strengthen their ability to create and adapt music to relevant ensembles and target groups, including target groups in connection with supervised professional training in primary and lower secondary school.
The course is reserved for students of teacher education in practical and aesthetic subjects for steps 1-13, music.

Knowledge:

The student

  • has knowledge of the basic elements of music (pulse, rhythm, tempo, tonality, melody, dynamics, harmony and form)
  • has knowledge of the various forms of musical notation
  • has knowledge of the basic principles of arranging and composing.

Skills:

The student

  • can create and communicate musical ideas adapted to various ensembles and audiences
  • can use playing by ear to support the creation of musical work
  • can use digital software in arranging and composing work

General skills:

The student

  • has developed a basic musical understanding in order to create and arrange
  • can develop and communicate their own musical ideas both orally and in writing
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer.
Practical-theoretical subject. Compulsory subject.

The teaching is organised on campus as lectures, as well as practical creative work, in class, groups and individually. The course is closely connected to the period of supervised professional training in primary and secondary school.

Participation is mandatory as interactive processes, ensemble interaction and academic conversations with fellow students and teachers are crucial to achieving the subject’s learning outcome formulations.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
