Ensemble Playing and Leading, Part 1
The course is about interaction and management in small ensembles and in the "classroom" - focusing on interaction, management and communication methods and awareness of this.
The course shall prepare the student for the workplace and is particularly associated with primary school, but should also be seen in context with the general cultural scene.
The subject will also focus on the students own interaction skills and various rehearsal and communication practices. The focus will be on playing by ear and notation (within the various traditions of notation), as well as on improvisation. The course will include dance/folk dance/movement, particularly in connection with the field of practice.
The course will provide an introduction into how to guide and promote interaction in different ensembles and how to clarify and communicate this. The course shall prepare the student for the workplace, with communication, cooperation and adaptation as key terms.
KNOWLEDGE
The student:
- has knowledge of different traditions and forms of cultural expression in musical interaction and ensemble management, including Sami traditions and culture
- has knowledge of how to motivate and lead fellow students, children and adolescents in different interactive situations
- has relevant instrumental knowledge
- has knowledge of how social relationships and group processes are important elements for the development of a safe and creative learning environment in various ensembles
SKILLS
The student:
- can direct different types of ensembles and communicate musical intentions
- has command of playing by ear, various types of notation and improvisation in an ensemble setting
- can adapt and develop their own and others’ musical management and performance in different ensembles
- can use relevant technology and digital resources
GENERAL COMPETENCE
The student:
- can apply practical methods of working collectively and creatively both educationally and in terms of performance
- can apply relevant subject didactics and communicate their own musical perceptions in different interactive and educational settings
- can facilitate training whereby fellow students and students in supervised professional training develop their interaction skills
can use relevant academic literature to reflect on their own role as a musician and leader, both in writing and orallya
The teaching is conducted on campus over two semesters. The teaching will involve some classroom teaching but will be primarily characterised by interactive ensemble and group work. It will occasionally be necessary to engage in activity in the afternoon/evening.
Participation in the course is mandatory, meaning participation and active collaboration between the students is necessary in order to achieve the desired learning outcome formulations that have been specified for the course.
In this context, interactive processes, ensemble interaction and academic conversations between students, fellow students and teachers will be essential.
Mandatory participation (OD) in lessons and in agreed student-led activity, minimum 80%.
Mandatory participation must be approved in order for students to take the exam.
One written/practical coursework requirement (AK) per semester. AK contains one practical and one written part. AK must be approved before the final course grade can be given.
Practical exam (PE) in spring semester:
Practical exam in ensemble and ensemble leading. Character: pass/fail. Duration: Up to two hours. Weighted 100%.
