Norwegian Language 1B

NOR1003
Norwegian 1 provides an introduction to Norwegian language education for grades 1-7. Linguistic and literary topics, questions of educational theory (didactics) and basic skills are central. The course encourages students to develop their own language skills, textual competencies and communication abilities.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has comprehensive knowledge of language development in children and recognizes signs of reading, writing and language difficulties
  • has knowledge about what characterizes oral, written and multimodal texts, texts in Nynorsk and Bokmål, different genres and mediums
  • has knowledge about literary theory and didactics and a selection of fictional texts in different genres and mediums, with focus on children`s and youth literature
  • has extensive knowledge of methods in initial reading and writing education

Skills

The candidate:

  • can use their knowledge about language development and literacy work, and explain professional decisions to promote oral and written language development in all pupils
  • can use their knowledge about what characterizes different texts and genres in work with oral, written and multimodal texts in different mediums
  • can use different methods in initial reading and writing education, can and adapt teaching, map and assess development of pupils` reading and writing skills
  • can communicate literature and inspire pupils` desire to read and encourage aesthetic experiences
  • masters written Nynorsk and Bokmål, and can instruct pupils in both languages

General competence

The candidate:

  • can facilitate pupils' development into competent language users who can participate actively in and beyond the classroom
  • can evaluate their own practice with respect to current curricula, professional knowledge and didactic insight
Compulsory

Learning activities and teaching methods include:

  • Individual and group study
  • Lectures
  • Testing and assessment tasks
  • Practical and aesthetic approaches
  • Seminars
  • Oral and written presentations

Reflection upon teaching practice also forms an important part of students' development as teachers.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Take-home examination (HJ): 5 days. Grading scale: Grade A-F.

Compulsory participation (OD): Compulsory participation in at least 80% of all teaching. Grading scale: approved / not approved.

Assessment task (AK): Students will submit work done individually and in groups. Grading scale: approved / not approved.

Coursework and compulsory participation must be approved in order to receive a final grade in the course.
