Strategic Media Management

ORG5002

The course will focus on how to build and establish systems, practices and procedures to minimize the risk of adverse events and create predictable working conditions within the organization and in interaction with other actors. Focus will be on strategic and effective communication and coordination between the various stakeholders, and especially the media.

Furthermore, focus will be on various aspects of risk and how it is perceived in the organization. The emphasis is on the development of risk management systems to identify, estimate and control the costs and revenues associated with risk. Operative management of crises and the establishment of an effective "crisis team" will be key topics.

The course is only open for students in the program Master in preparedness and emergency management.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of risk management and how to develop skills to prevent and prepare for adverse situations of danger to life, health, environment and other negative social effects
  • Gain insight into the various phases of a crisis, learning about and practicing communication internally and externally during a crisis with a special focus on the leadership role.
  • Acquire knowledge of key theories of risk management and risk control, and analysis methods to reduce the risk associated with an action, an activity, a system or situation
  • Develop expertise in interaction between multiple stakeholders to reduce risk and minimize the impact of emergencies.
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures, group work, and practice session/simulations.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
