Norwegian Politics and Policy

This course offers an introduction to political science through the Norwegian context.
This is an introductory course meant to offer students an understanding of the basic political structures and processes in Norway. It briefly introduces students to political science as a field of study, before focusing on political structures in Norway. As an introductory course, students will get an overview of the Norwegian political arena by looking at topics such as political institutions and administration, elections, minority politics, Sami politics, Norway's international relations and current political debates. Although the focus is on Norway, references are also made to other Nordic countries and the so-called "Nordic model".

Knowledge

The student has knowledge about:

  • basic concepts, models and theories in political science
  • parliamentarianism in Norway, including the structure and role of both parliament and the cabinet
  • the political system in Norway and its three-tier structure (national, regional and local)
  • the Norwegian welfare state and key contemporary political issues
  • minority politics, the political agenda towards the Sami population and Sami representation through the Sami Parliament
  • Norway's international relations and cooperation

Skills

The student is able to:

  • apply academic knowledge about political structures and processes in Norway to evaluate key policies and political decisions
  • apply academic knowledge in order to participate in discussions about political processes in Norway
  • apply academic knowledge to evaluate the Norwegian political system from an international perspective

General competence

The student is in a position to:

  • present basic concepts, models and theories in political science in writing
  • present and discuss characteristics of the Norwegian political system and important issues within Norwegian politics in writing
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Compulsory for students of the one-year program Norwegian Language and Society. Elective for other students.

Lectures and seminars (face-to-face, on campus)

In the seminars, students will be put into small groups to work on questions or topics to be presented to the class.

Annual evaluations which are included in the university’s quality assurance system.
An individual 1 week (6-10 pages home exam). Although the course is delivered in English, the exam can be written in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
