Practical Studies III

Gradually the student will work independently with basic animal care, as well as take responsibility for daily routines in the placement clinic.
Gradually the student will work independently with basic veterinary nursing, as well as take responsibility for daily routines in the placement clinic. The student will prepare and assist during medical procedures, diagnostic imaging, surgery and anaesthesia. There will be a final exam in the beginning of January, an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE).
For students admitted to the Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing at Nord University only. All subjects from the first two study years must be successfully completed before enrollment.

Knowledge

The student:

  • Has a broad knowledge of central issues, procedures, instruments, and methods within the field of veterinary nursing.

Skills

The student should:

  • Be able to monitor and assess the condition of patients with less complicated medical conditions.
  • Understand the principles of monitoring, assessment, and care for critically ill patients.
  • Understand the principles of first aid.
  • Be able to administer fluid therapy and medications.
  • Be able to prepare and conduct relevant diagnostic imaging procedures.
  • Be able to prepare equipment and patients for anesthesia.
  • Be able to prepare equipment, facilities, and patients for surgery.
  • Be able to assist in medical procedures, surgery, and anesthesia.

General Competence

The student should:

  • Be able to follow various patient categories from admission to discharge, including giving information to owners.
  • Be familiar with operational procedures and instruments relevant to working in a small animal clinic.
  • Ensure the safety of patients and staff during all procedures.
  • Be able to exchange views and experiences with others in the field and thereby contribute to the development of best practices.

Costs for semester registration and course literature apply. The university require that students have a laptop.

The student will have to cover travel and accomodation expenses.

Compulsory and only for Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing.
  • Practice at an external small animal clinic with a supervisor (demonstrations, individual guidance, and skill training)
  • Mandatory participation (MD) in a seminar prior to the practice
  • Written submissions
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

The practice period is 20 consecutive weeks, with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week, at a clinic in the Nordic region approved by Nord University. The student is expected to adhere to the work hours and regulations of the practice clinic. The student's progress will be documented continuously in a practice manual, and this, along with feedback from the clinic supervisor, will be the basis for the assessment. Upon registration in the course, the student commits to:

  • Comply with the internal regulations of the practice clinic.
  • Adhere to the confidentiality requirements in accordance with Norwegian legislation and sign a confidentiality agreement if required by the practice clinic.
  • Collaborate with the practice clinic's contact person, colleagues, and customers, and perform the job to the best of their ability.
  • Discuss any needs, problems, or concerns with the practice clinic's contact person and/or the university as soon as they arise.
  • Consistently fill out the practice manual and inform if the practice arrangement is interrupted.

Compound assessment, grading scale Passed / Not Passed

  • Compulsory participation - on seminar , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Written assignment, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Passed / Not Passed.
  • Practical examination , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Passed / Not Passed.
  • Practice, 20 weeks, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Passed / Not Passed.
