Are you a teacher and want social studies in the subject area? Do you want social studies as part of a bachelor's or master's degree? SAM1013 is suitable for those who want research-based and up-to-date knowledge about the content and teaching of social studies according to the new curriculum.

SAM1012 covers a broad range of social studies topics and social studies didactical methods, focusing mainly on local and national conditions in Norway.

SAM1012 and SAM1013 together comprise a full year unit in social studies.

SAM1012 enables you to teach both in Norwegian schools and other learning institutions.

The program is open to anyone who has general study competence.

Knowledge

  • have knowledge of key ways of thinking in social science, and current methods of enquiry
  • have knowledge of social studies as a school subject, and the subject's place in the Professional renewal.
  • Have knowledge of recent social studies didactics within history, geography and social studies
  • have knowledge of climate and environment, sustainability, as well as resources and resource conflicts nationally and internationally
  • have knowledge of World War II and the post-war period, with a main focus on Europe
  • have knowledge of similarities and differences between countries in different continents
  • have knowledge of international politics and globalization
  • have knowledge of key international conflicts and how they are resolved

Skills

  • be able to apply professional and didactic knowledge and skills in social science education
  • be able to work with societal values ​​and attitudes in education
  • Be able to participate in and lead discussions on social science issues
  • be able to facilitate education about social issues in a multicultural and global perspective, with emphasis on human rights and democratic principles
  • be able to work with different sources and with different methods to make social studies teaching exploratory

General competence

  • be able to reflect critically on social science issues and stimulate critical thinking
  • be able to work independently and in cooperation with others to identify, analyse and solve problems related to the pupils' learning and development in social studies
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.

This course is digital, and requires digital attendance and participation throughout the academic year. Active participation and dialogue is necessary to achieve the learning outcomes of the course. This includes the work assignments (AK).

In addition to digital participation, there will be voluntary excursions, visits to institutions, and practical work.

There are four work assignments (AK) during the semester.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Work requirements (AK)

Four assignments will be given as work requirements during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved / not approved.

AK must be approved before the student can receive a final grade in the course

Composite assessment (SV)

The final grade in the course is composed of two exam components:

Semester assignment (OP / O)

Individual semester assignment. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 40 percent of final grade.

Individual home exam (HJ) 2 days. Grade expressions A-F. Weighted 60 percent of final grade.

Both components of the exam must be passed to get a final grade in the course.
