Programme description

The English One-Year Programme is a disciplinary introduction to the study of English. The programme focuses on relevant linguistic and literary topics, and aims to educate students within these fields and to prepare students for continuing their studies in this discipline. The programme consists of four courses of 15 ECTS credits each. The courses are English Language and Linguistics, British Studies, English Education, and American Studies.

Career opportunities

The programme can be incorporated into full degree Bachelor programmes. It also facilitates professional language and communication development for professionals working across a range of fields in both the public and private sectors, including communication, tourism, culture, education and social work.
Classes meet weekly on campus according to a set schedule. 

Higher Education Entrance Qualification, acceptance into the English one year programme or other programmes at Nord University, and/or international / exchange student status at Nord University.

It is recommended to have English as a specialization subject in upper secondary school. Students are advised to acquire and familiarize themselves with the course literature at the start of the term.

A week-long study trip to the Norwegian Study Centre (NSC) at the University of York is an assessment task in British Studies. This is a popular and exciting opportunity to experience England. Students who do not wish to participate on the study trip will satisfy the assessment task through an alternative home assignment.

This program provides a foundation for further studies of English at a higher level at other universities.

Candidates

have foundational knowledge of the sound structures, word patterns, and grammatical structure of the English language as well as insight into the cultural conventions for its use

have knowledge of English as a world language and its developing role as a contact language for people from different countries and cultures, as well as its importance in internationalization in education and the workplace

have knowledge of and can distinguish between literary genres, as well as conventions of academic writing, including responsible use of secondary sources and research ethics

have knowledge and understanding of English in a holistic, cultural context

have insight into the possibilities for the subject's role in developing interpersonal communication, values, respect, and tolerance

have knowledge of strategies for textual, linguistic, cultural, and analytical approaches to literature and other texts

have knowledge leading to personal and academic maturation

have increased knowledge and understanding of language as a phenomenon

can analyze and write research-based articles on literary texts, and also apply precise and customized concepts in working with texts

No specific costs for students within EU/EEA/EFTA, other than semester registration fee and course literature
