Master in Social Welfare, part time

Upon completion of the course of study, the student will have acquired the following learning outcomes as defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge:

• Has advanced knowledge of main principles for the analyses of, and work within the social work professions, and specialized insight into perspectives, models of understanding and work methods within his/hers chosen specialization in social work or child welfare

• Has thorough knowledge of theoretical models that can contribute to the understanding and explanation of social inequality and social problems, and can apply these to understand and resolve scholarly issues at individual-, group- and society levels, and in the interaction between them.

• Has thorough knowledge of research methods in social science, and can apply knowledge in analysis of scholarly issues, research, professional development and innovation

• Can analyze scholarly issues that exists in the relationship between individuals in vulnerable life situations, the welfare services and society, both in a national and international context, and contribute to sustainability in welfare services and society.

Skills:

The candidate

• Can analyze and deal critically with various sources of knowledge, theories and perspectives, and use these to structure and formulate professional problem positions and scholarly arguments in the context of social work.

• Can analyze theories, perspectives and methods used in social work welfare analysis and professional practice, and work independently on analyses, ethical- professional and scholarly issues.

• Can use social science research methods and carry out an independent limited research project under supervision and in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics within his/hers chosen specialization in child welfare or social work.

General competence:

The candidate

• Can analyse professional ethical dilemmas and research ethical issues.

• Can apply his/her knowledge and skills in the analysis, professional development and in research, to resolve complex tasks and issues in professional work with people in vulnerable life situations, and perform professional development and research projects.

• Can communicate about scholarly and academic issues, analyses and conclusions in social work profession and academic discipline, both to specialists and the general public.

• Can contribute to new thinking, innovative analyses and professional methods to secure sustainability in welfare services and society, and can communicate extensive independent work within his/hers chosen specialization in child welfare or social work.

There are no tuition fees.

In addition to the semester fee and expenses for course literature, it is expected that the student has a laptop at his or her disposal. ​
