Biochemistry and Cell Biology

Biochemistry: Detailed knowledge on biological macromolecules' structure. Respiration, fermentation, and basic knowledge of photosythesis. Cell membranes and intracellular structures (organelles). The cell as the smallest living unit. Mitosis, meiosis and cell cycle. Signalling pathways. Replication, transcription and translation.
Admission to the course follows the admission requirements of the study program Bachelor in Biology and Bachelor in Animal Science.

Knowledge The student:

  • Has a broad knowledge of the concept of cells as the smallest living unit, their structure and function.
  • Has knowledge of basic biochemistry, with emphasis on respiration and biological macromolecules.
  • Is familiar with basic research fields in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry.
  • Can update their knowledge in cellbiology and biochemistry.

Skills The student:

  • Can apply relevant theoretical knowledge to the performance of simple laboratory tasks.
  • Knows how to scientifically report, using proper cell biology and biochemistry terminology, results obtained from basic cell biology experiments.
  • Can collect and use relevant published information for the interpretation of observations obtained from cell biology experiments.
  • Can reflect upon their observations obtained after performing basic cell biology techniques.

General competence The student:

  • Has knowledge and understanding of the risks when working in a cell biology laboratory.
  • Can communicate results and theories in writing.
  • Is familiar with new thinking and innovation processes in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry.
No costs except semester registration fee and course curriculum. Students must have a laptop as well as a lab coat.
Compulsory: BSc in Biology, Joint Bachelor Degree in Animal Science
4 hours every week for approx. 13 weeks. Lectures and group discussions. 3 times approximately 4-hour laboratory practice sessions
Annual evaluations which are included in the university's quality assurance system

Compound evaluation, grading scale Letter grades

  • Compulsory participation - lab , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Assessment task - submissions, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Written Examination, 4 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.

Pen, ruler and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.
