Placement Abroad in Biology

BI226F

The course consists of a 15 week full-time work placement in a relevant company or educational entity abroad. For quality assurance, placement abroad is only recognised if one of the following conditions applies:

  • If the placement is done at one of Nord’s partner universities, either through Erasmus+ or bilateral agreements.
  • If the laboratory or company abroad has a collaboration agreement with one of Nord’s partner universities
  • If the project in which you will participate, such as a marine conservation project or other, is recognised by a study abroad grant schemes, such as Erasmus+

Based on two years of academic progression in the bachelor's program in biology or a bachelor's degree in animal care. Satisfactory study results are required, normally average grade C or better. It is assumed that the students have good enough language skills to function in a practical work situation at the internship company.

For the internship course, deadlines apply other than what applies to regular courses. The student must report interest in internships abroad to the fault administration and International Office by 1st September of the semester preceding the internship. These and other deadlines are stated in the practice handbook.

The internship company must be approved in advance, and the student and company must sign an internship agreement. The internship handbook contains guidelines for internships, information about the application process and a number of practical matters. The students must expect to arrange their own internship, but that this must be approved by the faculty. The internship must be supervised, and the student must be followed up by a contact person in the company. Only practice conducted under the guidance of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Aquaculture can be included in this course.

Knowledge

The student should:

  • Know the work field, methods, and strategies employed by the host organization/company

Skills

The student should:

  • Be able to apply knowledge gained during the first two years of study to parts of the host organization/company¿s work area

General competence

The student should:

  • Through own activity gain experience from work operations relevant for his or her education
Costs: There may be costs related to transport and accommodation, depending on the location of the placement. Students can apply to Lånekassen for extra travel support, and other financing schemes, such as Erasmus+.
Elective: Bachelor in Biology and Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing
Work placement
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.

Form of assessment:

  • 15 weeks of placemnet
  • Work requirement consisting of three reports.

Students deliver three reports electronically on Canvas during their placement abroad. Instead of submitting a second report, students can choose to write a blog posted at blogg.nord.no.
