Cell Biology

BIO1009
In this course, you learn about the structure and function of cells, and how genetic information is transferred from parents to offspring. You also get a brief introduction to microbiology.
The course introduces the structure and functioning of cells. This includes the cells' chemical building blocks, the function of various cell organelles, transport across membranes and biochemical processes for energy turnover in the cells. Emphasis is placed on creating an understanding of how genetic information is transferred from parents to offspring, and why DNA contains all the stored information that is necessary for the construction of cells. This course also provides basic knowledge about bacteria, viruses, and prions. Studenter må ha gjennomført et sikkerhetskurs før de kan bruke spesialrom, spesialutstyr eller utføre prosedyrer som medfører forhøya risiko. In Bodø this is given through the course KJ105F Laboratory Safety. In Steinkjer a similar course is given.

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Nature Management, One-year Programme
  • Nature Management, Bachelor's Programme
  • Animal Welfare, One-year Programme
  • Livestock Science, Bachelor's Programme
  • Sustainable Economy and Bioproduction, Bachelor's Programme
  • Aquaculture Management, Bachelor's Programme
  • Veterinary Nursing, Bachelor's Programme

Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

After completing the course, students are expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • can describe the structure of cells and the function of various cell organelles
  • have basic knowledge of biological macromolecules and biochemical reactions in a cell
  • understand the structure of the DNA molecule, the inheritance between generations and the connection between genes and proteins
  • have basic understanding of microbiology, including bacteria, viruses and prions

Skills

  • have basic skills in practical laboratory work, safety in the laboratory and report writing

General competence

  • can use own words to discuss key concepts and principles within the subject area
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal. Students must buy their own laboratory coat for use in the laboratory exercises.
Compulsory
Lectures, laboratory exercises and problem solving.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course evaluations and study program evaluation. These evaluations are included as part of the university's quality assurance system.

Composite assessment, grading rule Letter grades

  • Work requirements - 3 reports, count 0/100 of the grade, grading rule Pass/Fail. Must be passed before taking the written school exam.
  • Written school exam, 4 hours, counts 100/100 of the grade, grading rule Letter grades A-E, F are failing.

Pen, ruler and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
