Aquatic Microbiology
BIO2001
The course will cover aquatic microbes, their unique metabolic functions and their roles in large-scale biogeochemical processes. The course will describe contemporary methods for studying aquatic microbes and their potential uses in bioremediation. Current and future perspectives on microbes under climate and environmental change will be introduced.
Primarily for bachelor and/or master students in biology/ biosciences. The course requires the student to have basic knowledge in chemistry and cell biology. The course is based at Bodø campus, with participation in practical work included as part of the assessment.
Knowledge
- Has broad knowledge of the diversity of aquatic microbes and their large-scale roles in aquatic systems.
- Is familiar with contemporary research and scientific methods, including detecting and studying aquatic microbes in the environment and in the lab.
- Can update their own knowledge in the field of aquatic microbiology.
- Has knowledge of the current and future societal impact of aquatic microbes.
Skills
- Can apply established academic knowledge and modern research to practical and theoretical problems in aquatic microbiology.
- Can self-evaluate their own academic practice and adjust it under supervision.
- Can find and evaluate scholarly information on aquatic microbiology, and communicate it in an understandable manner.
- Masters scholarly research and communicating it to their peers.
General competence
- Can plan and carry out varied assignments and projects, alone or as part of a group, and in accordance with ethical requirements and principles

No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature and laptop apply.In addition to the semester fee and syllabus literature, students are expected to have a laptop with microphone and web camera. Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in courses with laboratory exercises.
Elective for Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor in Sustainable Economy and Bioproduction. Studentens on exchange at Nord university.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
