Master's Thesis in Sustainable Production and Utilization of Marine Bioresources

The students choose the theme for their Master's thesis in the 1st semester of the program. The Master's thesis should preferably be empirical and have relevance in relation to the aims of the program. Both qualitative and quantitative methods can be used.

The assignment should normally be an individual independent work. The Master's students, together with the supervisor (s), must write a brief plan for the thesis, which will deal with the theoretical and empirical background for the project, including literature references, assessment of methods, data processing, ethical conditions, time frame and costs. The Master's degree program is a joint degree between 3 partner universities, and it is possible to complete the Master's thesis in collaboration with supervisors from several of the universities. The plan for the Master's thesis must be submitted at the end of the first semester.

Reserved for students in the study program Nordic Master in Sustainable Use and Production of Marine Bio Resources (MARBIO).

Knowledge

The student will

• have knowledge about scientific theory and methods used within marine bioresources

• have knowledge of various statistical methods used for treatment of data from the field of biology or social sciences, and be able to use these on own research data

• be able to gain practical and theoretical knowledge related to sampling and analyzes of data relevant for the theme of the thesis • have good knowledge of the subject, and a thorough understanding of theoretical approaches and literature related to the chosen topic

Skills

The student will

• be able to write a scientific report

• have acquired knowledge in selected analytical and statistical methods

• be able to critically analyze research performed within their own master thesis topic

• be able to acquire updated knowledge from electronic databases and scientific publications, and know the relevant scientific journals within the field

General competence

The student should

• be able to present own research data both orally and in writing

• have insight into relevant issues related to his/her master thesis

• participate in planning of new research projects within their own area of ​​research, related to finding relevant information, experimental design, statistical data analysis, critical dissemination of scientific information and results

No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Compulsory Master in Sustainable Production and Utilization of Marine Bioresources
The master's thesis is an individual scientific work, with students being entitled to supervision, individually or in groups.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Assignment with oral defense (Oppgave med muntlig, OM): After submission of the Master thesis, the student defends his/her thesis in a public lecture. After the lecture, there will be an oral examination.
