The course provides an introduction to the basic concepts of ethology, the domestication and history of dogs, cats and rabbits and about the natural behavior and needs of these species, husbandry, care and breeding.

Development of breeds. A theoretical and practical review of the safe handling of patients in various situations is an important part of the topic. Ethics and animal welfare regarding keeping, breeding, handling and medical treatment of pets

For students admitted to the Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing at Nord only.

Knowledge

  • of the natural needs and behaviors of the various animal species
  • of the challenges that domestication poses for different animal species
  • of the husbandry, care, breeding and handling of healthy animals
  • of Norwegian legislation regarding animal and animal welfare

Skills

  • know how to interpret animal signaling and understand animal behavior in different situations
  • know how to handle animals in different situations ensuring the animal's welfare and safety, and the safety of the owner and employees
  • be able to prepare and follow up on the stabling of patients

General Competencies

  • understand and interpret animal behavior in different situations
  • to communicate professionally with collegues
  • be able to reflect on ethical and animal welfare challenges in breeding and keeping animals as pets

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply. The university require that students have a laptop with internet access outside campus.

In additioni the students need scrubs.

Compulsory for and only for Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing.
Lectures, seminars, practical training, written assignments and presentations.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
