Infectious Diseases

DYR1003
Microorganisms causing diseases in companion animals in Norway and zoonoses. Preventive measures as hygiene, aseptics and vaccination.
The course provides an introduction to various types of infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites), and diseases that these agents can cause. The main emphasis is on agents that are common in Norway, and which can cause illness in family animals or are transmitted to humans from animals (zoonoses). Furthermore, an introduction is given to how outbreaks of infectious diseases and the spread of infection can be prevented.
For students admitted to the Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing at Nord only.

Knowledge

  • basic knowledge of general microbiology and parasitology
  • of the most important microbiological agents that occur in family animals in Norway and which diseases they can cause
  • of the basic techniques for growing and identifying bacteria
  • of the most common parasites in dogs and cats in Norway, their biology, life cycle, ways of transmission and the diseases they can cause
  • of basic techniques for the detection and identification of parasites.
  • of the concept of zoonosis, and have knowledge of the most relevant zoonoses in companion animals
  • of infection transmission, prevention and hygiene.
  • of immune prophylaxis in general and about common vaccine programs used in dogs and cats in Norway

Skills

  • be able to identify the risk of transmission from animal to animal or from animal to humans (zoonosis) and suggest prophylactic measures
  • consider proper diagnostic tests and perform diagnostic procedures for parasite infections
  • be able to account for and reflect upon preventive measures like vaccination and preventive treatment of parasite infections
  • find, consider and refer articles and information about infections and infection control

General competence

  • knowlegde of infectious diseases, infection control and preventive measures in general
  • be able to convey theories, problems and possible solutions, both in writing and orally, to other professionals and pet owners

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply. The university require that students have a laptop.

In addition the student needs scrubs and maybe a laboratory coat.

Compulsory for and only for Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing.

The student needs to be present at campus.

Lecutures.

Laboratory work with reports.

Presentations and seminars.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

  • Compulsory participation - laboratory exercises, seminars and practical exercises , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Assessment task - lab reports, submission of written assignments and presentation of written assignm, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Written examination, 5 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
