Medicines and Public Health

FAR2020
Medicines and Public Health focuses on public health from a pharmaceutical perspective. The course includes epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology, with particular emphasis placed on critical assessment of scientific literature. The course is conducted entirely online.
The course is a fully online course focusing on public health and the use of medicines. It contains an introduction to basic epidemiological and pharmacoepidemiological concepts. Individual work on an assignment provides students with practice in searching the literature, critical assessment of scientific articles on epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology, and in academic writing. The course is offered to international students. This course will be taught in English if international students attend.
The course is reserved for students in the Bachelor's Programme in Pharmacy.
The students must have passed all first, second and third semester courses in order to access teaching in the course.

Knowledge

The student

  • have knowledge of epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology
  • have knowledge of health literacy and how variations in such affect different patient and user groups' disease management, coping and self-care
  • have knowledge about the indigenous status of the Sámi people and their rights, particularly in respect of health and social welfare
  • have knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, with an emphasis on pharmacoepidemiological methods
  • is familiar with key ethical research regulations and principles
  • is familiar with sustainability development goals, as well as national and global health and environmental challenges
  • is familiar with social and health challenges and is able to identify and follow up people with such challenges by implementing measures or making referrals
  • is familiar with the relationships between health, education, work and living conditions, and is able to apply this when providing their service

Skills

The student

  • is able to use medical databases in order to search for scientific literature
  • is able to critically evaluate scientific articles based on epidemiological methods and apply them to highlight pharmaceutical issues

General competence

The student

  • have insight into and an understanding of how medicines contribute to the best possible public health
  • is able to master academic writing using appropriate sources and references
  • is able to reflect on the importance of scientific evidence and distinguish between documented and undocumented claims
In addition to the semester fees and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptops, web cameras and headphones. Students must obtain their own calculator which is approved for the study programme.

The course is an online course. Students are required to actively engage in their learning process. Individual work accounts for a high percentage of the course workload.

The following learning activities are used during teaching: lectures (digital), exercises, literature seminars, group work and individual work with and without supervision. Much of the course will include work on an individual assignment.

Compulsory attendance is necessary to ensure that students achieve the learning outcomes described for the course (skills and general competence).

Compound assessement, grading scale A - F. All parts described below must be approved/passed in order to receive a final grade in the course.

  • Compulsory participation - 80%, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Oral examination, 30 minutes, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale A - F.
