Marine Fish Production

HAV2006
The course reviews the production of Atlantic cod, Atlantic halibut, wolf fish, wrasse, lumpfish and species of interest in Norwegian aquaculture. Students will develop knowledge in biology, technology, nutrition from broodstock to grow out. Water quality and treatment are also included.

On successful completion of the course, the student can:

  • demonstrate broad knowledge of biology for relevant marine fish species in farming.
  • account for zootechnology for marine fish species.
  • demonstrate broad knowledge of water quality and treatment, and their importance in juvenile production.
  • explain the different production protocols for live feed.
  • define the relevant research areas and challenges in marine fish farming.
  • describe the environmental, nutritional and welfare requirements of the relevant species.

Skills

The student is able to:

  • Have a good command of relevant technics on a theoretical plan.
  • Participate in commercial marine fish farm operations.
  • Explain the principles used in the farming of relevant species from egg to harvest in Norway.
  • Update her/his knowledge in the subject area.

Competence

The student is be able to:

  • Update knowledge in marine fish biology and implement technical improvements for state-of-the-art marine fish production.
  • Participate in R&D projects.
  • Discuss challenges as welfare and sustainability in the aquaculture industry
  • Communicate central concepts both in written and oral form.
No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.
Compulsory.
Lectures, seminars and assignment.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment, grading scale Letter grades

  • Written assignment, group, comprises 40/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
  • Written examination, 4 hours, comprises 60/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
Pencil, pen, ruler, basic calculator and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.
