Language, Dissemination and Communication Technology

Secure language skills and a thorough understanding of genre norms, recipient awareness, context and medium are basic areas of expertise in the programme. Expertise in dissemination also encompasses the use of images, video, audio, animations, etc. Some of this is thematised under “Digital Storytelling 1” (see above), but in this course it is all placed in a broader theoretical framework, which forms the basis for a number of practical papers and exercises. A key aspect of this is reflecting on one's own use of language, and trying out different linguistic styles and rhetorical devices.

Knowledge:

Students

  • have advanced knowledge of language and communication theory. This encompasses the distinctive nature of various graphic systems (modalities) and how they can interact, genre norms, rhetoric and the importance of context and the medium to the formation of opinion.
  • have in-depth knowledge of our media culture, and the importance of this culture to exercising a profession as a journalist or communicator.
  • can use their knowledge to understand the opportunities/resources digital communication technology provide in the present and the future.

Skills:

Students

  • can work systematically with the dissemination of text, images, video and audio, independently and in collaboration with others. can use language effectively, both written and spoken.
  • can analyse and apply different theories on mediated communication and the formation of opinion.
  • have advanced analysis skills and source-critical expertise.

General qualifications:

Students

The student must expect the same expenses as for Digital Storytelling (see this).
Mandatory
The course provides for various learning activities and teaching methods (face-to-face at gatherings and online): Lectures and seminars/webinars, self-study, instruction in real time and as video recordings, work with theoretical and practical papers individually and in groups, partly for presentation to fellow students and partly for publication in the programme’s online newspaper and on social media.
Mid-term and final evaluation. The evaluations are part of the university's quality assurance system.
