Elementary mathematics and statistics with emphasis on applications in biology.

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Biology, Bachelor's Programme
  • Nature Management, Bachelor's Programme
  • Livestock Science, Bachelor's Programme
  • Sustainable Economy and Bioproduction, Bachelor's Programme
  • Aquaculture Management, Bachelor's Programme
  • Veterinary Nursing, Bachelor's Programme

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

On successful completion of the course, the student should have obtained the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge of the ordinary functions of one variable
  • understands the difference between the average rate of change and the instantaneous rate of change of a function
  • has knowledge of the most used descriptive measurements of data, probability distributions and inference techniques
  • understands the difference between a population parameter and the sample estimate of the parameter

Skills

  • is able to do elementary algebraic simplifications and be able to solve equations
  • is able to calculate rates of change of functions of one variable
  • is able to use elementary probability theory
  • is able to use elementary estimation theory and perform elementary hypothesis tests

General Competence

  • is able to carry out necessary problem-solving when working with mathematics tasks
  • is able to carry out necessary problem-solving when working with statistics tasks
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory for BSc in Biology. Elective course for the following Bachelor Programmes: Nature Management, Livestock Science, Sustainable Economy and Bioproduction, Aquaculture Management, Veterinary Nursing.

Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.
Take-home exam, 4 hours

Software access for exam: Word, plus calculator and students have the choice of one among the following 3 statistical programs: Excel, R and Geogebra.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
