Qualitative Methods
Course content
The course will provide an in-depth theoretical and practical introduction to qualitative methods/ approaches. The course provides a basis for understanding and applying quantitative methods that are relevant to professional development and research in health sciences. The course includes practical exercises in data collection/production, analyses and research ethics assessments. Assessment of research-based knowledge is highlighted through the critical investigation of articles that employ qualitative methods.
Knowledge:
- has advanced knowledge about different qualitative methods and their possibilities and limitations
- specialised insight into qualitative research design and the importance of participation and user involvement in research
- has in-depth knowledge about key concepts in qualitative research
- can apply knowledge about qualitative methodology to formulate a research issue within the field of health sciences.
Skills:
- can apply and explain the choice of qualitative methodology for research and professional development in an independent manner
- can analyse and relate critically to various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate academic reasoning
- can apply qualitative analysis methods and tools to investigate academic issues
- can analyse and apply research ethics guidelines related to qualitative methods
General competence:
- can independently analyse, discuss and disseminate research-based knowledge based on qualitative methodology
- is able to master terminology and forms of expression in qualitative research
- Can, with the help of quantitative research, contribute to innovative thinking and innovation processes within one’s own subject area
• Session based. The seessions are conducted as lectures, presentations and practical exercises with feedback from fellow students and teachers. Work must be expected before and between meetings.
• Methods used: Lectures, digital learning path, seminars, group work, presentations and practical exercises.
• Mandatory attendance at presentations and some of the practical exercises. Up to 20% absence is permitted.
One coursework (AK1) approved/ not approved. Coursework must be approved before the final course grade can be given.
Compulsory attendance (OD1 and OD2)
Individual assignment (OP). Grading: A-F. Examination committee with an internal and external examiner.
