Composition and Arranging

MUS5005
The course will enable the students to compose, arrange and transcribe music for a wide array of instruments and ensembles. The genre profile is generic, allowing individual specialization.
The lectures will focus on composition and arranging with Sibelius as notational software.
60 credits in music is required to enroll in the programme. Prior experiential learning may waive this requirement.

KNOWLEDGE

The student

  • is thoroughly familiar with different instrumental and vocal ensembles, and with the characteristics of each instrument and type of voice.
  • is thoroughly familiar with notating music by using Sibelius notational software.
  • is thoroughly familiar with adapting musical source material
  • has a proficient level of knowlegde about composing, arranging and adapting music to different ensembles, and how to notate it.

SKILLS

The student

  • is able to analyze, transcribe, compose and arrange music for different ensembles.
  • is able to use Sibelius notational software to notate own transcriptions, compositions and arrangements.
  • is able to compose and arrange music for a predefined target group, such as a school class.
  • is able to utilize a selection of composition techniques.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student

  • can communicate and cooperate with musicians within different genres.
  • can consolidate knowledge and skills from the course into a general competence as arranger and composer, and use this competence in new areas within their field of work.
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to have access to their own laptop or stationary computer with Sibelius notational software installed.
Compulsory theory course.

The course is taught through lectures, group-based activities and individual guidance.

Individual home work assignments are given between sessions.

Active student participation and cooperation is necessary in order to achieve the learning outcome descriptions. This includes interactive processes, ensemble participation and academic conversations with fellow students and lecturers.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Combined assessment:
  • Mandatory participation (OD) in lessons, minimum 80%, and in agreed student-led activity. Mandatory participation constitutes 0/100 of the final assessment. Mandatory participation must be approved in order to conduct the exam.
  • Portfolio of three works. Guidance is given on works-in-progress. The student will eventually hand in a complete portfolio, and this portfolio is given a final assessment. The portfolio assessment constitutes 100/100 of the total final assessment. Grading scale A-F, Best A, Fail F.
