Emergency Preparedness Organizations and Crisis Response

ORG5001
This course provides insight into regional, national and international emergency response systems including its regulative frameworks, aims and functions. This course focuses on organization of and resource configuration in different types of preparedness systems and how they are adapted to their operational contexts, including new threat pictures. We elaborate on coordination mechanisms binding the systems together at different levels. Competence resources and especially the enhancement of collaborative skills are highlighted. We elaborate on organizational learning and competence plans. The students take part in table-top and simulation exercises at NORDLAB- Nord university’s preparedness management laboratory.

  • Advanced knowledge about theoretical approaches for studying emergency preparedness organizing processes and organizational learning
  • Knowledge about the importance of competence development for the achievement of the organization’s strategic objectives.

Skills

Students

  • Are able to analyze the functionality of different types of emergency preparedness systems based on different theoretical approaches
  • Are able to utilize analytical models on practical problems within organization system development and emergency preparedness.
  • Are able to plan, arrange and evaluate different training approaches and exercises aiming at competence development

Students

  • Are able to obtain different academic approaches on emergency preparedness organization for crisis response
  • Are able to acquire and learn from research literature within organization theory, and learning and competence development in preparedness organizations
  • Are able to work independently and collaborate with others in own organizations and with crisis staff of other organizations regarding issues of emergency response and preparedness, organizational learning and evaluation.
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures, work in groups, self-study, as well as table-top (TTX) and simulation exercises.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
