Pedagogy and Pupil Knowledge 2, 1-7

PEL2001
This course contributes to an analytical and critical perspective on schools school and the candidate`s own practice with reference to pedagogical and ethical issues. The course provides knowledge about the school as an organization, professional development and about ethical consciousness as a basis for teachers` cooperation with colleagues, parents and different institutions.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has knowledge about the school as a societal institution, frameworks for schooling, and governance
  • has extensive knowledge about the school as a complex organization, organizational learning and pedagogical development
  • has knowledge about the significance of democracy and professional community in school development
  • has extensive understanding of curriculums and is able to discuss challenges related to the implementation of curricula and other regulatory documents
  • has extensive knowledge about the significance of professional community for learning and development
  • has extensive knowledge about pupils` development in a pluralistic society

Skills

The candidate:

  • can facilitate interaction in classes and groups in grades 1-7, and analyse activities with reference to community and learning
  • can use research-based and empirical knowledge to work systematically with the school`s learning community and psychosocial surroundings
  • can plan and participate in research-based school development, both individual and in cooperation with others, and evaluate development measures in light of the school`s mandate and differing pedagogical perspectives
  • can critically analyze and utlise the school`s basic values
  • can identify and discuss ethical questions in the pedagogical field

General competence

The candidate:

  • can analyze and participate in debates about school development and school politics in society
  • can inspire to engagement, creativity and formation of opinion in and among pupils
  • can identify and analyze challenges in the pluralistic school, and utilize the inherent opportunities diversity provides

Compulsory

The teacher education programme has a focus on professional practice. Active participating in teaching and learning, and cooperative learning are essential.

Participation in all planned learning activities is compulsory. Teaching is organised into year groups, classes and tutorial groups.

The programme is designed to facilitate learning in a range of arenas and contexts, including lectures, online meetings, study groups, seminar groups, professional practice and discussions forums. Independent study is also an important part of learning.

Supervision forms part of the learning and teaching process. During supervision, students are encouraged to participate actively in identifying, exploring and solving problems.

The programme of study is annually evaluated by the students through course evaluations and programme of study evaluation. These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.
Professional practice is an integral part of the subject. There is a focus on relating subject theory to practice in schools, with the goal of establishing connections between content and methods in pedagogy and student knowledge, and practice training.  For more information, see separate practice plans for the programme.
