IMPLEMENTATION OF SUPERVISED PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

It is assumed that all students will observe the adopted plan for supervised professional training and familiarise themselves with the stipulated requirements and expectations. It is also assumed that students will follow the practical training supervisor’s work day and observe the prevailing procedures at the individual school. The head teacher is responsible for supervised professional training at their school.

The various components of supervised professional training: observation of the teaching of the practical training supervisor and fellow students, reflection on the teachers’/students’ relationship to the pupils and between the pupils, conducting separate lessons, on their own and together with fellow students, and collaboration time and guidance, constitute a whole that relies on close contact and good dialogue between the parties. Together with preparatory work and follow-up work, as well as daytime and evening meetings, this constitutes mandatory supervised professional training. There should be a close correlation between what takes place in the lessons and in the supervised sessions.

PREPARATION OF SUPERVISED PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

The supervised professional training coordinator functions as a connecting link between Nord University and the practical training school. Information about supervised professional training, including information about the practice group, should be submitted to the practical training supervisors and head teacher at the relevant school before the supervised professional training commences. The practical training supervisor, students and subject teacher will plan the further guidance and follow-up of the practice group.

During the first meeting at the practical training school, the students will receive information about the school, pupils, teaching schedules, working methods, etc. The head teacher will meet the students and provide their own part of the necessary information.

ACADEMIC SUPERVISION

During the period of supervised professional training, the student shall receive up to 10 hours of guidance, in groups, per week. Guidance will be provided both individually and in groups and its aim is to support the learning and development of individual students. Supervision will take place on an ongoing basis. An individual evaluation shall be conducted in the middle and at the end of the period of supervised professional training.

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION

Assignments on expectations relating to supervised professional training and self-evaluation shall be written in accordance with further defined guidelines. The purpose of the evaluation is to make students aware of their own development and give them an opportunity to influence their supervised professional training. The assignment in the professional studies programme will be provided with an assignment text. All three shall be submitted digitally to the learning platform by the stipulated deadlines.

ATTENDANCE

Supervised professional training is mandatory for all students and is an integrated part of all subjects in the programme. Supervised professional training requires 100% participation. The student is responsible for reporting any absence to the head teacher as soon as possible during the period of supervised professional training.

The practical training supervisor will submit notification of absence to Nord University within one week of the last day of supervised professional training. In the event of absence, all days/hours of absence must be replaced by a corresponding period of supervised professional training. A new period of supervised professional training will only be offered to students who have valid grounds for being absent. Valid absence refers to illness or significant welfare-related reasons. Absence lasting for more than three days must be confirmed via a medical certificate or a certificate from another competent source. In the event of prolonged absence, the Head of Studies together with the practical training supervisor and subject teacher will assess whether the entire period of supervised professional training should be taken again. The timing of any new period of supervised professional training will be specially agreed. However, the general rule is that this should be completed during the same semester in order to enable normal study progress.

Students engaged in supervised professional training and who wish to participate in student-political work, must observe the guidelines for attendance, as specified in the study plan. In study programmes that have a requirement for 100% attendance, students must agree with the practical training supervisor to catch up on any remaining supervised professional training in a tuition-free period.

Students who are unable to participate in student-political work due to being engaged in supervised professional training, must provide notification of their absence in good time so that the deputy representative can take over the task.

PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF DOUBT REGARDING WHETHER SUPERVISED PROFESSIONAL TRAINING HAS BEEN PASSED

In the event of any doubt regarding whether a student will receive a pass grade for a period of supervised professional training, the practical training supervisor shall contact the head teacher of the party to whom the head teacher has delegated supervised professional training responsibility at the practical training school, as well as the subject teacher at Nord University. In an individual discussion, as early as possible during the period, the student should be advised that the supervised professional training may be assessed as failed. The student will receive written feedback from the practical training supervisor and subject teacher about what must be improved for the remainder of the period of supervised professional training. Written documentation of the discussion will be signed by the student, practical training supervisor and subject teacher. The practical training supervisor will retain the document until the student has completed the period of supervised professional training. If the situation as detailed in the discussion is not sufficiently improved, the student will receive a fail in supervised professional training.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Nord University designates practice placements in municipalities with which it has cooperation agreements.

Teacher education for practical and aesthetic subjects offers 130 days of supervised, varied and assessed professional training. During the first year of study, 30 days of supervised professional training will be conducted in years 5 -7 of primary school. Supervised professional training is divided into two periods, 10 days autumn and 20 days spring.

There must be progression in supervised professional training and it must have an integrating function in the study programme. Supervision and assessment of supervised professional training is the joint responsibility of subject teachers, practical training supervisors and the head teacher at the practical training school. Development of the student’s skills associated with being a teacher takes place in a mutual relationship between the practice arena and the educational arena.

Continuous suitability assessment of all students shall take place during the entire study programme, in both the theoretical and practical parts of the study programme, and shall form part of a total evaluation of the student’s ability to function in the profession.

Supervised professional training is assessed on a pass/fail basis.

In order to pass supervised professional training, following a total assessment, the student must have achieved the learning outcome for the professional practice course, have a 100% attendance record, as well as completed and received approval for all assignments associated with the period of supervised professional training. Absence from supervised professional training or non-approval of assignments will in any case result in a fail. Students who fail the supervised professional training must complete supervised professional training again in its entirety.

Assignments that form part of the period of supervised professional training:

  • Submission of expectations of supervised professional training, to be delivered digitally on the learning platform
  • Submission of self-evaluation, to be delivered digitally on the learning platform
  • Subject assignment in the professional studies programme on supervised professional training with an assignment text provided

Assignments are assessed by the relevant subject teacher.

In the diploma, the grades in supervised professional training courses are merged into one grade in supervised professional training.

The supervised professional training during the study year must be passed if students are to continue the course in the next study year.

New/Deferred examination:

According to the "Regulations on studies and examinations at Nord University", students are entitled to attend supervised professional training twice. If the student fails at the first attempt, they are required to wait until the next period of the same supervised professional training in order to make a second attempt. The student must register in writing for the new supervised professional training at the start of the study programme. The new period of supervised professional training shall be carried out in accordance with the same guidelines as ordinary supervised professional training. The student will receive written notification if they have failed supervised professional training.
