The subject is a practice subject. In the practical studies, the students will gain experience in establishing contact with children and families, as well as investigate, evaluate and make decisions in child welfare cases.
In practical studies, students will get experience with establishing contact and with children and families, as well as investigating/researching, assessing and making decisions in child welfare matters. Furthermore, the student must participate in interdiciplinary collaboration meetings - and cooporation - to gain knowledge of interdisciplinary work at both individual - and system level.
The student must be admitted to the bachelor's program in child welfare. All courses in 1. and 2. semesters must be passed in order to take the course.

Knowledge

The student

  • Has knowledge of their placement site, their mandate, tasks and function.
  • Has knowledge of their placement site's role in a larger network of welfare services.
  • Has broad knowledge of central academic and professional tasks, challenges and processes in the field of Child Welfare and Child Protection.
  • Has knowledge of systematic work with families and networks.
  • Has knowledge of interprofessional collaboration on an individual- and system level.
  • Has broad knowledge of assessments and the understanding of child best interest, children and families rights, and indigenes (samic) childrens right to their own language and culture.
  • Has broad knowledge of professional ethics, values, dilemmas and professional inquiries in social work
  • Can update his/hers knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and guidelines.

Skills

The student:

  • Can apply a broad and multidisciplinary knowledge base in systematic and targeted work with children, youth and families.
  • Can apply professional knowledge and discretion to guide children, youth and their parents in learning- mastering- and changing processes.
  • Can apply academic-, professional- and experience based knowledge in assessments of children and youth’s care situation and behaviour, and facilitate appropriate measures
  • Masters to create and maintain relations, collaborate and communicate in a way that promotes inclusion, participation and user involvement.
  • Masters to plan and carry out collaborative meetings.
  • Can apply knowledge, skills and experiences to meet children, youth and families in vulnerable life situations with understanding, empathy, and recognition.

Competence

The student:

  • Can plan, carry out, evaluate and document professional tasks in accordance with ethical and professional requirements and principles, alone and as part of a group.
  • Has insight into his/her preconception, attitude and values, and the importance of relational competence in professional work in the field of Child Welfare and Child Protection.
  • Has insight into the interplay between research based knowledge, experience based knowledge and personal competence in his or her professional practice.
  • Can exchange opinions and experiences with colleagues and supervisor, and through this contribute to developing good practice.
  • Can document and communicate his or hers professional knowledge and assessments, both in writing and orally.
Students must expect some expenses related to transportation, room and board as well as semester fee registration. Covering of travel and living expences are regulated by guidelines for travel- and living expences.
Compulsory

The students are entitled to supervision 1-2 hours per week during their professional practice. Part of the supervision can be carried out in groups. Students shall be supervised by a practical training supervisor with experience in the placement field and who is a qualified social worker.

Together with the student, the practical training supervisor shall draw up a cooperative agreement concerning the placement and conduct evaluations after six and 12 weeks, as well as a final evaluation. Students are also entitled to supervision from an assigned teacher from the university. The teacher will be available for the placement site and students during the whole placement period. The teachers provides induvial supervision for the students on written work and written assignment.

The study program is evaluated annually by the students through subject studies. Evaluation is part of the university's quality system.
The course consists of 20 weeks of practice in the fourth semester.

Professional Practice (PR) consists of 20 weeks of supervised internship with requirements for attendance, as well as two written works. See supplementary procedural rules for completion and assessment of the course in the practice regulations.

Passed Professional Practice (PR) requires fulfilled learning outcomes, attendance according to regulations, and approved written assignments. In case of not-passed practice, the whole placement must be re-done.

PR and OP must both be approved to pass the subject.
