Do you want to experience arctic landscape and learn more about the health benefits of the human-nature connection?

Surrounded by a breathtaking artic coastline and mountains, this course will develop your appreciation of nature’s flora and fauna diversity and cycles as well as your outdoor skills such as hiking preparedness, fishing, and outdoor cooking and sleeping.

The course focuses on the theoretical understanding of the relationship and alignment between humans and nature, and how this can be utilized to strengthen well-being and health through:

  • Human biological and social development, lifestyle and our relationship with the environment and nature
  • The relationship between nature and human well-being and health
  • Eco philosophy, ecopsychology and the Norwegian outdoor tradition
  • Group dynamics
  • Ethical principles and assessments

After completing this course the candidate should have the following learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge about prevailing models that explore and explain how our well-being, health and robustness is linked to connection and alignment with nature (example: the human sensory system).
  • Academic knowledge can be applied into learning and practising basic outdoor skills such as hiking preparedness, fishing, and outdoor cooking and sleeping.

General competence regarding the relevance and insight into the history and principles of ecophilosophy, ecopsychology and the Norwegian outdoor tradition. In the context of climate change and nature loss; to promote and clearly communicate environmental challenges and sustainable outdoor activities.

The Summer School participation cost is NOK 1000. It covers teaching, evaluation and participation in excursions and activities.

All participants cover own travel and accomodation costs.

Elective. For students participating in Nord Summer School.
1 week course. Practical and theoretical introduction (Bjerkeset), and outdoor activities led by Kristine Nordland and Inger Marie Kvarum. We will mix theory and practical sessions in the natural areas around Bodø. There will be lectures, group work, field studies with overnight stays in nature.
Evaluation at the end of the course.
