Adaptive Learning (Master)
See study programmeAdaptive learning involves realising a scientific understanding of upbringing and teaching. Such activity represents both theoretical and practical insight into a specific teaching situation in upbringing and teaching, and through that also provides norms for pedagogic actions in practical situations. However, a scientific understanding will never be able to provide complete, objectively correct answers as to what would be the best pedagogical action in a specific practice. Nevertheless, a key goal of this programme is to provide each student with an adequate foundation for taking the best possible action upon reflection in his or her specific upbringing and teaching situation. Adaptive learning builds on cross-disciplinary knowledge from the undergraduate programme, special pedagogy, and the philosophy of pedagogy, psychology, sociology, history and theology. Such basic knowledge must be placed within a pedagogical framework prior to being applied onto upbringing and teaching.
The master¿s programme in adaptive learning aims to provide an understanding of what such practical knowledge should be built upon as well as what methods that are used to gather knowledge in different contexts.
Practical pedagogical activity represents a series of personal challenges, and this programme aims to contribute to increased self-knowledge and self-understanding for each student. The programme further introduces students to an introduction of what acquiring new understanding and knowledge means, and how understanding and knowledge can be increased in different areas of knowledge. Another goal of the programme is for the students to develop their researcher attitude and experience what it means to work based on a scientific way of working and thinking, and to motivate them to participate in the relevant pedagogical debates.
Students may apply to have elected courses from other universities or university colleges included in their course mix of this programme.
Knowledge
The candidate should on successful completion of the programme have:
- A thorough knowledge of the implementation of special-needs education in the education system
- Good knowledge of special-needs education at the level of the individual and the system
- Broad pedagogical insight into the education system, where work environments require both academic knowledge and additional practical competence in innovation work
- Good knowledge of school leadership
Skills
The candidate should on successful completion of the programme be able to
- reflect critically over his/her own depth of knowledge and corresponding breadth in the master¿s course
- make use of the knowledge by reflecting on and updating research topics at local, regional, and international levels
- analyse different cultures in the northern area with respect to background and ideology
General Competence
The candidate should be able to make use of his/her abilities to build up his/her own competence

Admission requires holding a teacher, special subject-teacher or pre-school teacher education on bachelor's level or the equivalent. If the teacher education programme comprises four years of full-time study, the student may be accepted to this master's programme upon completion of their third year of study. The grade average must be C or better.
Other foundations for admission may be relevant and will be considered on an individual basis.
For the specializations (mastermodules) the entry requirements are as follows:
General Didactics: Teacher training and/including 60 ECTS of pedagogics with a grade of C or higher.
Norwegian Didactics:Teacher training and/including 60 ECTS credits in Norwegian with a grade of C or higher.
Mathematics DIdactics: Teacher training and/incliding 60 ECTS credits in Mathematics with a grade of C or higher.
Occupational Didactics: A completed 3-year occupational or professional training (bachelor, cand.mag.,or the equivalent).At least 80 pedagogical study-points (60 ECTS credits+ 20 ECTS credits for a pedagogically-related subject), undertaken during the above or as an addition, with a grade of C or higher.
Inclusive Education: Teacher training and/including 60 ECTS credits in special needs pedagogics with a grade of C or higher.

Studiet kvalifiserer også for arbeid innenfor universitets- og høgskolesektoren i de ulike fagfeltene, for forsknings- og utviklingsarbeid og for ulike arbeidsoppgaver innenfor privat og offentlig sektor.
Coursework and exams are assessed and graded based on the Norwegian system using letters A to F, in which A is the best/highest grade and F equals fail or not passed. Work may also be assessed based on a passed/not passed or approved/not approved basis.
