Circular Economy for the Oil and Gas Industry

Circular Economy (CE) aims to decouple the relationship between growth and material use through e.g. reducing, reusing, and recycling strategies. CE strategies are necessary to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and are a top policy priority in Norway and in Europe as a whole, offering also large business potentials. Oil & gas, and related supplier industries, connect large national markets for materials and service, with economy-wide footprints and scalable benefits from CE transition.

This online course is primarly directed towards participants from the oil&gas, an suppliers industries (both employeed and currently unemployed). It will provide the participants knowledge and skills to see opportunities that can strengthen a company's competitive position by harnessing the circular economy opportunities. This will allow them to gain a competitive advantage on the labor market, as well as allow them to better support the introduction of new CE solutions, innovations, approaches and business models in the company / industry where they are employed.

Some questions students will be able to better address after the course: What opportunities can arise from decommissioned oil rigs? Why should design for Circular Economy be taken into account in the oil & gas industry? Which new circular business models should the suppliers consider? Introducing new circular innovation, solutions and projects – what berries should you consider?

Knowledge

  • Acquire knowledge about CE principles and the managerial, social and political challenges of sustainable and circular businesses, with specific emphasis on the oil & gas, and related suppliers industries.
  • Obtain knowledge about the effects of the shift towards more circularity in general and in particular as pertaining to the oil, gas, and related supplier industry
  • Gain knowledge on main theoretical perspectives and concepts related to circular economy and the circular business models, to be able to understand the general context and take it into consideration when engaging in designing and implementing new CE solutions.
  • Attain knowledge on innovation processes that can transform businesses and industries towards CE, as well as on the CE barriers.
  • Obtain knowledge about the real-life and potential applications of circular economy principles, CE solutions and needed business model innovations in the oil and gas industry businesses.

Skills

  • To analyse and critically assess foundations for sustainable, circular business within the oil and gas sector, as well as across sectors to be able to realize the whole potential of CE.
  • To identify and evaluate innovative opportunities for value-creation from adapting circular economy principles within the focal sectors

General competences

  • Can contribute to new thinking and innovation for circular economy
  • Can work independently and in cooperation with others as a team member or consultant in a CE related project
  • Enhance their competences in communicating potential solutions within their companies, by increasing their abilities to provide convincing arguments and to act as an circular economy expert in different (innovation thinking prone and/or decision-making) situations in the companies.
  • Are able to see the topic in a broader context.
  • Can describe and reflect on research-based literature on circular economy.

Requirements for admission are same as for the bachelor level studies , i.e. Generell studiekompetanse.

The Norwegian applicants that do not have the general study competences and are 25 years or older, can also be admitted if they comply with the Special admission requirements (i.e. Realkompetanse).

You must have relevant competence for a study program that can offset the fact that you do not meet the usual admission requirements. As the program is directed towards participants from the oil, gas and supplier industry, especially prior experience working inside these industries are relevant.

This online course will provide its participants knowledge and skills to see opportunities that can strengthen a company's competitive position by harnessing the circular economy opportunities

Online lectures, practioners and experts’ sessions, assignment work, group work and case studies.

  • Lectures with a review of relevant literature
  • Work (often in groups) with practical cases related to the lectures and discussions providing for interactive learning experience.
  • Guest lectures/presentations by business practitioners and other experts that provide practical inputs on various relevant CE-related topics and business examples, especially as relating to oil&gas, and related suppliers’ industries
  • Mandatory short assessment task and an assignement related to the course topics.


No costs except a semester fee of NOK 725,- (required by law), and syllabus literature.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.
