The course provides an introduction to Occupational Health and Safety and knowledge to work systematically with health, environment and safety activities. Among the main topics included in the course are: Work, working environment and the Working Environment Act, Prevention and Health promotion, The Inclusive Workplace, Organizations, management, participation and internal control regulations, Psychological and social factors in the working environment, and Physical and chemical factors in the working environment.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will:

Knowledge and understanding

  • have advanced knowledge of key issues, theories, concepts, processes and tools concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety
  • have advanced knowledge of introducing and performing Internal Control in enterprises

Skills

  • be able to explain and use the terminology of Occupational Health and Safety, and be able to communicate with others and inform others about key issues using concepts of the discipline
  • be able to analyze issues concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety, and reflect on how systematic measures can be planned, organized, implemented and maintained in conformity with requirements in the health, environmental and safety legislation

General Competence

  • be able to apply their knowledge and skills to promote efforts to improve conditions with regard to Occupational Health and Safety
  • be able to communicate about issues concerning the field of Occupational Health and Safety with both specialists and the general public
  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification (international students refer to NOKUTs GSU list ).
  • Language requirement
  • Bachelor degree (180 ECTS credits) or equivalent. A minimum of 1 year's work experience after graduation is required
The programme provides knowledge and skills which will be useful in Occupational Health and Safety Management and Human Resource Management, in the position as an elected Safety representative, as a member of the Working Environment Committee, or as an employee in Occupational Health Services.
The program could be taken as a part of a master program.
The course will be organized as five intensive periods of concentrated teaching, mainly lectures. Each period usually runs from Monday to Thursday. Between sessions students keep in touch with the university using e-mail, telephone and an electronic learning managmenent system, Canvas.

No special costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Written exam (6 hours) in the end of the second semester, and two compulsory written assignments.
An 6-hour written examination with the regular Norwegian grading system (A-F).
The study programme is evaluated annually by students using course evaluation studies and by the programme director. The evaluations are included in the university´s quality assurance system.
