The courses on this programme provides students with broad insight into the tasks, authority and professional ethics related to the control aspect of preservation work. In the part of the programme that concerns familiarity with nature, ecology, registration of nature and monitoring as well as action plans for plants are emphasized. Students will further be familiarized with the contents and organisation of different kinds of preservation services through both theory and praxis. Students will have the opportunity to increase their skills in selected topics that are vital for providing a unified overall preservation service. An introductory course (15 ECTS cr.) in police and ranger topics consists of a course (NKO106) emphasising policing topics, law, environmental crime as well as practical preservation work. Please note that at least 80% attendance is required.

Upon successful completion of this programme, the candidate shall:

Knowledge:

  • have thorough knowledge of relevant laws and regulations
  • have knowledge of ecology, nature registration and monitoring
  • have knowledge of Norwegian flora and fauna
  • have knowledge of management and facilitation initiatives

Skills:

  • be able to plan and conduct different kinds of supervision activities
  • be able to apply laws and regulations regulating supervisory activity and management of nature areas and cultural heritage monuments
  • have knowledge of subject-specific ethics and the ability to reflect upon the conduct of work assignments related to supervisory and managerial work
  • be able to assess safe passages, alone and as leader of a group, during different seasons and through different types of nature
  • be able to identify different kinds of cultural heritage monuments
  • be able to provide guiding and information about nature and monuments

General competence:

  • have knowledge of different nature and monument preservation services, including authority, reporting and professional ethics
  • understand relevant law regulations enabling control functions of preservation work
  • understand the ethical challenges of the subject
This one-year programme provides candidates with broad competence for working with different kinds of preservation services, guiding and information. The introduction course that is part of the programme provides candidates with the academic background required for environmental controlling, including planning, execution and reporting. Both the one-year programme and the introduction course meet the academic requirements for being awarded limited police authority. Please be aware that it is the police that awards any such authority in case needed and such awarding is subject to a police certificate of good conduct. Courses from this programme provide formal background for having work assignments related to the specific academic contents of the respective courses.

This programme applies a variety of assessment forms, depending on what is suitable for each course. Forms include written take-home exams, semester assignments and species testing. On some courses, the grade will be based on a combination of these assessment forms.
The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme coordinator. The evaluations form a part of the university's quality assurance system.
