An understanding of professional social work as an interplay between profession, societal conditions and relationships of social policy is recurrent in the structure and composition of the course. The teaching is built on humanistic values and traditions related to the UN¿s Declaration on Human Rights and relevant UN conventions, as are also proclaimed in the profession¿s basic ethical statements. Weight is also given to developing awareness of the basic values of the profession by developing the students¿ ability to reflect critically on their own values, attitudes and philosophies of life. The study will thus educate user-oriented, reflected and analytical professional practitioners who are qualified to exercise care services in regard to people in vulnerable life situations.

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has broad knowledge of social work theory, history, traditions, distinctive character and position in society, and how social work can contribute to prevent, reduce and resolve social problems.
  • has broad knowledge of social problems at individual-, family-, and community levels, and how social structures and welfare policy objectives and instruments influence living conditions, participation and social inequality.
  • has broad knowledge of communication, relations to and interaction with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly at individual-, group-, and community levels.
  • has broad knowledge of care competence and various forms of neglect of care, aswell as conditions for humans development, mastering, resources and active participation in different stages of life.
  • has knowledge of relevant legal methods, welfare administration principals, central laws and legislations, human rights and indigenous peoples rights and status.
  • has knowledge of social science research methods, philosophy of science positions, and scientific work quality standards.

Skills

The candidate:

  • can apply professional knowledge and methodological approaches in assessment, analyses and documentation of professional work with children, adolescents and adults at the individual-, group-, and community levels.
  • can apply professional knowledge of relations and communication in assisting systemtic change work, and can provide guidance to users, patients and next of kin in learning-, coping-, and change processes.
  • can find (locate), evaluate and provide sources to information, academic and professional knowledge, and present this both orally and in writing.
  • can apply legal rules, provide information on rights and obligations, and exercise legal and professional discretion in interaction with individuals, families and groups.

Applicants must fulfil the requirements for Norwegian General Study competence as well as language proficiency requirements in Norwegian and English language.

Social workers work in all parts of the health- and social care fields, mostly in the municipal health and social services. Social workers work in these fields of working life:

The bachelor's degree in social work (social worker) provides, amongst other things, the basis for seeking admission to the Master in Social Science with specialization in Social Work at Nord University. In addition, a number of colleges and universities provide relevant further education opportunities.

Students may apply to undertake their practice period abroad. 

Students who wish to practice in one of the places the university has an agreement with abroad can apply for this by 20 June. Applicants must submit a personal application, letters of recommendation and conduct a personal interview. Applicants are ranked according to an overall assessment of grade results from the first academic year, application, letters of recommendation and interview.

No specific costs other than semester registration fee and course literature.

Compulsory attendance and participation in activities. Assessment includes oral examination, reflective studies, communication training and preparation for professional practice. Refer to specific regulations related to complusory attendance.

Supervised professional practice for one semester. Professional practice must be approved in accordance with relevant regulations. 

Students must pass all examinations in the first year of study in order to commende the second year of study.

Students must expect to attend lectures in English in some lectures, and that some syllabus may be in English.

The final examination in the programme is an oral examination in Interdisciplinary Professional Learning.
The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme director. The evaluations form a part of the University's quality assurance system.

The programs practice section is two-fold. The first part, which lasts four weeks, is completed during the first and second semesters of the study as parallel practice. The second part, which has a duration of twenty weeks, is completed in the fourth semester of the program. This part of practice is a full time practice. The student receives guidance during both practice periods. Each part of the practice is assessed to pass / fail according to the criteria set out in a separate rules of practice. There are written assignments related to both practice periods that are assessed according to the grades approved / not approved. All written assignments must be approved in order for the practical part of the education to be passed successfully.

Students must expect work in the afternoon / evening in relation to the practice of 1 and 2 semesters.

In connection with practice of 4 semesters, students must expect to have practice outside Bodø, as the whole of Nordland and the northern part of Trøndelag is a practice area.
