Public Health Work
The course introduces students to knowledge-based public health work in a national and global context.
Students will acquire knowledge of disease prevention and health promotion from a life-cycle perspective as a way of promoting good health and improved quality of life. Moreover, students will develop skills in exploring problems by applying different sources of knowledge.
Knowledge
The student
- has broad knowledge of public health work, disease prevention and health promotion
- has knowledge of national and global factors affecting public health at the individual, group and community level
- has knowledge of how social inequality and social problems such as neglect, violence, abuse, bullying, drug and alcohol addiction, and poverty affect health, living conditions and quality of life
- can update their knowledge of public health through the use of international and national databases, summary documents and knowledge summaries
- knows the principles for assessing knowledge sources and scientific quality
Skills
- The student can apply scientific knowledge to contribute to good public health through health promotion and disease prevention from a life-cycle perspective
- can apply scientific knowledge, user knowledge and relevant results from research and development as a basis for illuminating practical and theoretical issues in public health work
General competence
- The student has insight into the connections between health, education, work and living conditions, and can apply this knowledge to contribute to good public health and promoting participation in the workforce
- has insight into public health challenges and can discuss different strategies within public health work
- can discuss different perspectives and experiences of knowledge-based public health work in ways that are appropriate to different target groups
The course does not require physical presence at the study location and can be included as part of a period of study abroad.
Teaching on the course will be offered in English and consist of lectures, skills training, group work, self-study and individual guidance. The course literature will be available in English.
Compound assessement, grading scale A - F.
All parts described below must be approved/passed in order to receive a final grade in the course.
- Compulsory participation -80%, grading scale Approved/Not approved.
- Written assignment, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale A - F The student formulates a paper topic relevant to Public Health.The specific requirements for the assignment are provided in the course plan.
The exam answer must always be made by the candidate personally.
