Nord University has participated in several research projects funded by the EU, especially through the Horizon 2020 programme. Our target groups comprise actors of all ages and social positions, especially in the school system and in community arts initiatives. 2022-2027How do organisms adapt to their local environment? This question is a main focus of evolutionary biology. It becomes especially urgent in times of anthropogenic climate change, as we need to predict whether populations and species will be able to adapt to future conditions. To fully understand adaptation, we need to identify the underlying genes and genomic regions. In particular, we need to analyse how adaptive genetic variation is distributed across the species range, and whether genetic variation necessary for responding to future conditions is available locally. The proposed project will make a substantial contribution towards this goal by studying the genetic basis of temperature adaptation across space and in exceptional detail.

2020-2024Regulation of development from the onset of a multicellular organism's formation is of fundamental scientific importance, because it sheds light on one of the principal mechanisms of life. The current understanding of the process is that maternally provided factors drive the development, while the zygotic genome is initially inactive in regulatory functions. The InnControl project challenges this long-standing dogma. We hypothesize that two additional regulatory layers exist before the maternal-to-zygotic transition, a recognized regulatory switch point. The project brings together internationally renowned academic experts in transcriptomics, proteomics, functional genomics, RNA biology, fish reproductive and developmental biology, epigenomics, and notably, team members being in forefront of science and method development in epitranscriptomics. Teleost fish, zebrafish and medaka, will be model organisms.

Although these are priorities in both Norway and Denmark, the complex demands and treatment of healthcare students and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) is complicating the fulfillment of such goals. A richer account of learning environments, vocational education, and experiences of care work will be necessary to provide a competent and reliable workforce for the future. Responding to the urgent need to attract and retain qualified elderly care staff, a core objective of LABCare is to explore, using appropriately boundary-crossing frameworks, how conditions for learning may be enhanced through collaborative arrangements between vocational education and municipal employers.

2023-2028Aquaculture is one of the most important and international industries in Norway, however, major challenges such as climate change, food security, market and resource fluctuations threaten its future. The diversification of cultured species in aquaculture is one of the most promising solutions to these challenges. Atlantic cod is a prime species with proven economic potential. Its successful domestication is a strategic resource of food security, however, several aspects of its biology are still unknown including the early onset of puberty under farmed conditions. Although the onset of puberty in cod is largely controlled with photoperiod manipulation, in large-scale production of the species in sea cages the application of light-stimulation is limited, thus puberty is controlled to some extent.
