EU-funded research
EU-funded research refers to research projects that receive financial support from the European Union (EU) through various programs such as Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, and the European Research Council (ERC).
Nord University has participated in several research projects funded by the EU, especially through the Horizon 2020 program. These projects encompass research in areas such as energy, environment, health, and social sciences, and have involved collaboration with other research institutions and companies in various European countries. Therefore, Nord University has been an important actor in promoting research cooperation and knowledge exchange across borders, and has contributed to increasing the international visibility and recognition of research carried out in Northern Norway.

The ROBUST project is about learning to "build back better" by innovating one's way through a crisis. We take a citizen-centric approach, asking how crisis governance at multiple levels (EU, national, regional, and local) all add up to shape how citizens experience crisis and response. ROBUST facilitates mutual learning by gathering evidence from 18 European locations, identifying strategies and mindsets that enable robustness, and hosting online learning sessions.PI at Nord

Research Council of Norway
The Norwegian Research Council supports projects in various fields and aims to contribute to increased knowledge, innovation, and sustainable development in society. Nord University has been involved in several research projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The university has participated in projects encompassing research in areas such as education, health, technology, and culture. This has involved collaboration with other research institutions and companies in Norway and internationally.
Through participation in research projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council, Nord University has contributed to promoting knowledge development and innovation in various fields. The university has also strengthened its position as a leading actor in research and development in Northern Norway.
This proposed project will conduct a social network analysis (SNA) of the Norwegian field of literary intellectuals before, during and after the German occupation. The project will draw scientific robustness from systematic cultural sociology, but will also employ other approaches, ranging from digital data mining to archival studies and historically-informed literary analysis. The project will be comparative, drawing on European experience.

2022-2027How do organisms adapt to their local environment? This question is a main focus of evolutionary biology. It becomes especially urgent in times of anthropogenic climate change, as we need to predict whether populations and species will be able to adapt to future conditions. To fully understand adaptation, we need to identify the underlying genes and genomic regions. In particular, we need to analyse how adaptive genetic variation is distributed across the species range, and whether genetic variation necessary for responding to future conditions is available locally. The proposed project will make a substantial contribution towards this goal by studying the genetic basis of temperature adaptation across space and in exceptional detail.

2020-2024Regulation of development from the onset of a multicellular organism's formation is of fundamental scientific importance, because it sheds light on one of the principal mechanisms of life. The current understanding of the process is that maternally provided factors drive the development, while the zygotic genome is initially inactive in regulatory functions. The InnControl project challenges this long-standing dogma. We hypothesize that two additional regulatory layers exist before the maternal-to-zygotic transition, a recognized regulatory switch point. The project brings together internationally renowned academic experts in transcriptomics, proteomics, functional genomics, RNA biology, fish reproductive and developmental biology, epigenomics, and notably, team members being in forefront of science and method development in epitranscriptomics. Teleost fish, zebrafish and medaka, will be model organisms.

2021-2024This project, EduSmart, wants to promote education and disseminate knowledge about smart city governance and performance management in the High North. There is an increasing debate about smart cities and communities and the sustainable development of different regions all over the world. This includes the Arctic and the High North. However, while smart city initiatives are growing, the concept itself, developed outside the High North and the Arctic, requires translation into that unique context. This, in turn, identifies a need for relevant management education and research on international partnerships.

2023-2026Worker recruitment, retainment, and upskilling are interwoven challenges in the elderly care field. Although these are priorities in both Norway and Denmark, the complex demands and treatment of healthcare students and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) is complicating the fulfillment of such goals. A richer account of learning environments, vocational education, and experiences of care work will be necessary to provide a competent and reliable workforce for the future. Responding to the urgent need to attract and retain qualified elderly care staff, a core objective of LABCare is to explore, using appropriately boundary-crossing frameworks, how conditions for learning may be enhanced through collaborative arrangements between vocational education and municipal employers.

2023-2028Aquaculture is one of the most important and international industries in Norway, however, major challenges such as climate change, food security, market and resource fluctuations threaten its future. The diversification of cultured species in aquaculture is one of the most promising solutions to these challenges. Atlantic cod is a prime species with proven economic potential. Its successful domestication is a strategic resource of food security, however, several aspects of its biology are still unknown including the early onset of puberty under farmed conditions. Although the onset of puberty in cod is largely controlled with photoperiod manipulation, in large-scale production of the species in sea cages the application of light-stimulation is limited, thus puberty is controlled to some extent.

2023-2028The overall aim of this project is to facilitate sustainable, personalised and safe medication use for older adults living at home. The broad Norwegian political agreement that all residents should be able to live at home for as long as possible is challenged by the healthcare service's struggle to provide safe medication treatment to home-dwelling older adults. Inappropriate prescribing of medicines, lack of competence, inadequate communication and information sharing, and a low degree of personal orientation constitute major challenges for medication safety in home care services.
