Introduction to Bio-based Industries

The subject gives an introduction to biological production and economy in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture under Norwegian conditions.

Norway has the best prerequisites to succeed in the bioeconomy. With access to knowledge, capital, technology and renewable resources in first-class oceans, forests and soil. To reach a greater potential for new value creation, we need knowledge about all these industries.

The course gives a basic introduction to the most important bio-based industries in Norway from a biological and economic standpoint. Bio-based industries are industries that are based on the production and processing of renewable biological resources such as forests, soil, livestock and plants for food, energy, products and materials. Emphasis is placed on becoming knowledgeable about the biological basis, structure and economy of the agricultural, aquaculture, waste and energy sectors in Norway. Key topics are production logic, value chains and innovation system structure, actors and competitive situation and sustainability.

The subject is reserved for the study programme Bachelor's degree on circular bioeconomy. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.
Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

No costs except semester registration fee and the cost of the literature on the reading list. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures, Guest lectures and exercises. Company visits/observational practical training. Thematic case.
Study programs are evaluated annually by the students through course and study program surveys. These evaluations are part of Nord University’s quality assurance system for education.

Assessment task: 3 specialization tasks in groups, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.

Off campus exam, 2 days, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
