BIO1006
The course deals with the most important technologies used to utilise renewable resources for the production of food, raw materials for feed and biofuels.
The course deals with the most important technologies used to utilise renewable resources for the production of food, raw materials for feed and biofuels.
The subject is reserved for the study programme Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Economy and Bioproduction. Other students can get admitted if there are places available and the criteria for admission are met. Contact student advisor.

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program. In addition the students must have passed these courses:

  • KJE1000 Basic Chemistry
  • BIO1009 Cell Biology
  • BIO1022 Biochemistry and Biomolecular Science

After completing the course, students are expected to have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • have knowledge of biorefining bioresources for microbial food and feed.
  • have knowledge of different methods and technologies used in the processing of industrial by-products from biological processes in soil, forestry, and aquaculture.
  • have knowledge of the conversion of bioresources into bioenergy.

Skills

  • outline various processes in bioprocessing and biorefining.
  • identify relevant resources from side streams in established bioproductions in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture.
  • estimate quantities and potentials in bioresources for use in the production of food, raw materials for feed and biofuels.

General competence

  • assess the processes and technologies that are relevant for processing various bio-raw materials.
  • communicate key subject matter through relevant forms of expression
  • exchange views on and participate in scientific discussions on bioproduction and technology
No costs except semester registration fee and the cost of the literature on the reading list. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures, seminars, exercises, outings and project work.
Study programs are evaluated annually by the students through course and study program surveys. These evaluations are part of Nord University’s quality assurance system for education.
