Bioeconomy, Circular Economy and Society

BIO2000
The course seeks to show how one can develop a holistic economy that provides a basis for high quality of life within viable societies and sustainable ecosystems. The focus is on individual and societal development where bio- and circular economies are central. Bioregional economics is used as an overall framework to highlight relationships and how the local and global spheres must interact.

The bio- and circular economy requires insight into both natural-science and social-science mentality and issues. The aim of the course is to give the students insight and knowledge into how different disciplines in combination contribute different perspectives to create sustainability. Sustainability and the relationships between economics, nature and culture are central to the subject. Knowledge about how these three sectors affect and complement each other is important for understanding the complexity of collaborating across disciplines. In the course, different principles of economics at the macro level (economic system), meso level (business management), and microlevel (private economy) are discussed in light of local, regional and global societal and environmental challenges.
