Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship

In the world with increasing dynamics and global challenges, there is a need for individuals, leaders, and employees who can create new opportunities and inspire the change.

Social and sustainable entrepreneurship is about creating profitable initiatives that contribute to society and the environment. This form of entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly important in the world facing challenges such as climate change, inequality, and economic disparities.

This course provides insight into how social and sustainable entrepreneurship can contribute to solving global challenges and achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

It is possible to apply for admission to the course as a single course. There are reservations about the available capacity on the course. The applicant must meet the current admission requirements for the Master of Science in Global Management program or Master in Entrepreneurship and Business Development program.

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course, the student should have:

  • In-depth knowledge of tools for creating entrepreneurial opportunities for social and sustainable entrepreneurship, and how to seize them through resource mobilization.
  • Advanced knowledge of key theories and concepts in social and sustainable entrepreneurship.
  • In-depth knowledge of types of business models for modelling social and sustainable enterprises.
  • Advanced knowledge of drivers /barriers for social and sustainable entrepreneurship, as well as strategies to promote growth and survival for social and sustainable enterprises.

Skills:

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Critically apply entrepreneurial tools to solve ill-defined problems, create, and seize entrepreneurial opportunities for social and sustainable entrepreneurship
  • Critically apply relevant theory and tools to develop, revise, and evaluate an innovative and feasible strategic plan for social and sustainable development.
  • Develop and optimize business models for social and sustainable enterprises.
  • Reflect critically upon barriers and the impact of social and sustainable entrepreneurship using various tools, such as United Nations (UNs) sustainable goals and triple bottom line.

General competence:

Upon completion of the course, the student should demonstrate:

  • Effective collaboration in interdisciplinary teams to carry out advanced projects.
  • Effective communication of work results using terminology within social and sustainable entrepreneurship.
  • The ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Strong presentation and pitching skills.
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory

Assembly-based teaching, campus and digital.

The course consists of lectures, workshop, group work, presentation and peer feedback rounds. Lectures present key concepts and theories related to social and sustainable entrepreneurship. Active participation is expected. Students are expected to do pre-class work before attending.

Students participate in a workshop at the beginning of the course where they gain an understanding of the tools used to address ill-defined challenges: defining needs, creating opportunities, and generating solutions.

Students use relevant tools to develop a strategic plan for social and/or sustainable entrepreneurship, which is part of their coursework (graded, 30/100).

Students present their work and provide constructive feedback to each other. Final presentation round is mandatory for participation (graded, 10/100).

The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
