Spatial Planning and Urban Theory

GEO2007

Main topics of the course include the history of planning, urban theory, and spatial development. The course also takes up planning at European and international level, sustainable development and planning as a social process.

We can offer the course in English for international students.

The course provides an introduction to community/urban/regional planning as interaction and procedures that involve many actors, and how policies, planning objectives, overarching sustainability goals, and social ambitions are coordinated in a joint process and finalised in the plan documents.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • has knowledge about the history of planning and urban theory
  • has knowledge about spatial development,
  • has knowledge about European and international planning, sustainable development and international conventions such as the Aarhus Convention and ILO 169
  • has knowledge about Norwegian urban history
  • has knowledge about the logic and development conditions of smaller and medium-sized cities.

Skills:

  • can lead multidisciplinary work involving municipal community plans and municipal plans
  • can carry out parts of the planning work within the chosen academic specialisation
  • can use thematic data in planning work and in the process of establishing plan data
  • can perform urban studies and spatial analyses based on socioeconomic data.

General competence:

  • has insight into planning from an environmental perspective and a historical perspective
  • has an understanding of how the urban ideal has influenced developments in Norway.
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer. Students must cover board and lodging expenses during the gatherings. Potential bus expenses for excursions are paid by Nord University.
Compulsory for undergraduate students in Geography and Spatial Planning. Alternatively, students on the programme can participate in student exchange this semester. Elective for other students.
Lectures, excursions and assignments, individually or in groups, where students work on planning questions. Teaching materials will be facilitated with online support. A significant part of the teaching is in the form of seminars, where literature and the work of individual students are presented and discussed.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course evaluations and study program evaluation.

Composite assessment. Students will receive a letter grade.

  • Obligatory participation accounts for 0/100 of the grade and will be approved / not approved.
    • Must be passed before the beginning of the Home Exam.
  • Three assignments account for 0/100of the grade respectively. Students will receive letter grades.
    • Must be passed before the beginning of the Home Exam.
  • The home exam will take place over 4 days and account for 100/100 of the grade. Students will receive a letter grade.
