Organization and Leadership
The importance assigned to leadership in the wake of new ideological currencies stands at the forefront of this course. Active leadership is expected, even in organizations which traditionally give limited space for leadership (e.g. professional bureaucracies and expert organizations). At the same time, the enactment of leadership appears more complex due to multiple and inconsistent goals, as well as employees demanding tailored job design and co-determination. Tensions and dilemmas pertaining to these changes, and how leaders try to handle them are central topics focused on in this course. Important topics are:
- New managerial regimes and their impact on professional organizations
- Leadership as something innate, learned or situationally adaptive
- Possibilities and limitation of leadership in service-providing public organizations
- Gender, diversity and leadership
- Leadership, conflicts and conflict resolution
- Leadership, strategy and sustainability
