Cultural and Urban Sociology

SOS1005
The course offers an introduction to cultural sociology, focusing on the construction of meaning and the relevance of meaning for understanding social life and our constructed realities. Culture, sociological approaches to the cultural field, and cultural sociology as a program for sociological approaches to society are central elements in the course.
Basic requirements (Generell studiekompetanse) for University admission

Knowledge

The student has:

  • Knowledge of the term ¿culture¿, its complexity and possible contents.
  • Knowledge of the main lines and developments within cultural sociology.
  • Knowledge of various theoretical approaches to culture and the production of meaning, and the application of these in social analysis.

Skills

The student can:

  • Present and discuss central perspectives presented in the curriculum.
  • Apply relevant academic knowledge in reflections on the relationship between dimension of meaning and social life.
  • Apply perspectives from cultural sociology in empirical analysis.

General competence

The student can:

  • Reflect upon the content and complexity of culture as a concept.
  • Reflect upon academic and professional ethical issues related to the understanding of, and analytical approaches to, social life.
  • Debate and acquire new knowledge in accordance with academic standards.
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop.
Elective
Net-based lectures, lectures and seminars
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
