Programme description

The Master degree in clinical nursing gives qualified nurses the opportunity to further develop the expertise to meet and shape the future of the health sector. Students develop the competencies to understand needs and changes within the sector, at individual, group/department and community levels, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Upon completion, graduates should have the skills to initiate and participate in strengthening clinical practice, professional development work and research within their own institution and practice area. Graduates will also be qualified to participate as experts in public debates, where their experience and knowledge is necessary.

Career opportunities

Student can choose between specialisations, each of which consistutes an independent form for professional development. A completed Master thesis qualifies candidates for position within clinical work, leadership and professional development in practice, as well as participation in research and development in the field of clinical studies. This programme also qualifies candidates as for teaching positions in secondary schools.

Applicants should hold a bachelor¿s degree in nursing with a minimum average grade of C/2.7 as well as one year¿s nursing practice.

Students enrolled on this programme may use the general exchange opportunities provided by Nord University, such as mobility programmes like Erasmus+ and Nordplus.
A completed Master´s degree programme provides the basis for qualification for admission to PhD programmes, both nationally and internationally.

Upon successful completion of the programme, the candidate:

KNOWLEDGE

  • Has advanced knowledge of clinical nursing and specialised knowledge of a limited area of his or her choice
  • Has thorough knowledge of scientific theories and methods in clinical nursing
  • Can apply knowledge of nursing sciences, care philosophy, and ethics and methodology in an innovative way to professional development and research
  • Can analyse nursing-professional issues based on the subject¿s scientific tradition, character and role in society

SKILLS

  • Can analyse and critically related to various information sources such as professionally relevant databases, and can apply these to structure and formulate professional nursing arguments
  • Can analyse existing theory and work independently as well as in cooperation with others in solving practical and theoretical challenges
  • Can apply relevant methods for research and professional development and independently argue the rationale for his or her choice of method
  • Can carry out an independent, limited research or development project, under supervision and in accordance with current research-ethical norms

GENERAL COMPETENCES

  • Can analyse relevant nursing and research-ethical issues as well as document and carry out quality assurance of his or her professional praxis
  • Can apply his or her knowledge and skills innovatively in order to carry out advanced work assignments and projects in clinical nursing
  • Can communicate extensive independent work and masters the expressions of the field of nursing sciences, ethics and methodology
  • Can communicate about nursing issues, analyses and conclusions in clinical nursing
  • Can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in nursing, nationally as well as internationally
