Programme description

The purpose of the study is to cover parts of the complex field of palliative treatment, care
and nursing, and to provide competence that is applicable both inside and outside the
institution. By improving the services for the patient group with incurable disease, it will lead
to a better quality of life for this patient group and the families.

Career opportunities

The study provides competence to work with people who have a serious, incurable disease
within the municipal and specialist health services.

Three-year health or social science college or university education. Applicants with other
college or university education can be admitted after individual assessment. It is an
advantage to have worked with patients in the last phase of life.

The study can be included as part of, among other things, the following studies at NORD: Master in Clinical Nursing.

Learning outcomes


Knowledge

  • Has advanced knowledge and understanding of how to provide good relationships, good communication and interactions with the patient, relatives and their families, in early and late stages in palliative care and caring, from a physical, mental, social and spiritual / existential perspective
  • Has advanced knowledge and understanding of the importance of teamwork to facilitate good palliative care and caring for patients and their relatives from a person-centered perspective
  • Has advanced knowledge and understanding of the need for relief of symptoms for the individual patient in the palliative phase and at the end of life, especially in heart disease, kidney disease, non-malignant lung disease, neurological diseases (ALS, MS), disease in children and dementia
  • Has advanced knowledge and understanding of how each individual healthcare professional can take care of the patient's relatives
  • Has advanced knowledge of a holistic reflection model for palliative care

Skills

  • Can use good relationships, good communication and interactions with patients and their relatives, in the early and late stages of palliative care from a physical, mental, social and spiritual / existential perspective
  • Can use and facilitate symptom relief for each individual patient during the palliative course and at the end of life, especially in heart disease, kidney disease, non-malignant lung disease, neurological diseases (ALS, MS), childhood disease and dementia
  • Can care for the patient's relatives
  • Can apply a holistic reflection model for palliative care and caring)
  • Can locate current academic and research literature

General competences

  • Can analyse various relevant professional and ethical issues in palliative care and caring
  • Can plan and carry out group assignments in accordance with ethical requirements, academic method requirements and requirements for academic writing
No costs beyond semester fee and syllabus literature. Students must have their own PC.
