See study programmeThe study program is directed at foreign exchange students who through activities wish to learn about Northern Norway. The study programme is suitable for everyone working with human relations as teachers, in the tourism-industry, as art and culture presenters, or in the health service. The students participate in activities encouraging experience and learning. The learning outcomes through activities in different subjects as geology, outdoor activities, art, cultural heritage, and experience-based pedagogy are articulated in essays and blog. The programme is divided into 3 separate courses of 10 ECTS each: Course 1: Experience of Nature Course 2: Experience of Art, Architecture and Cultural Heritage Course 3: Experience Pedagogy The courses can be taken independently of one another. This makes the courses compatible with other courses offered by Nord university.
The different courses describe specific their different learning outcomes. However, all courses focuses on the natural and cultural landscape of Nordland through geo-, outdoor-, art-, and cultural heritage-experiences. Through different activities the students will, therefore, gain a consciousness and insight of the identity of people, the North-Norwegian society, and the nature people are adapting to.
Adventure Knowledge provides a great specialization for students who wish to work with programme development, planning or implementation across a range of fields in both public and private sectors, including tourism, culture, social work and education. The package provides a unique experience for teachers.

Rib-boat-trip from open ocean conditions outside the harbour of Bodø through the passage between two fiord-systems (Saltenfjord/Skjerstadfjord) creating the ¿worlds strongest¿ maelstrom.
Practical information
We will meet up at the Hurtigruta-harbour (see map). You can take bus from the university (Route 1) to bus-stop Orestad park downtown and walk to the premises of the tour-provider Stella Polaris (see sign) close to the harbour-office connected to Hurtigruta harbour, c. 15 min walk from the bus-stop. If you take the bus 1451 o¿clock from the university you will be there in time.
Clothing: Boots that survive some seaspray ¿ other clothing/equipment will be provided by Stella Polaris.
Friday 24th August
0830 - 1600: Geological field trip along the fiord-system Saltenfjord - Skjerstadfiord - Misværfjord
Meet up at the main entrance at the university 0830.

Student-fieldwork mapping glacially formed features, demonstration of the local bedrocks and formation and deglaciation of the fiord-system.
Practical information
We will be out the whole day, so bring with you cloths to stay warm and dry, and lunch/something to drink.
Wednesday Friday: 29th August ¿ 31th September: 3 days round trip Bodø - Engabreen

Quarternary geology, glaciology, geotourism, archeology - further specified in the guidebook. The tour will include a walk on the glacier Engabreen and into two caves: one coastal cave and one karst-cave.
Practical information
Accommodation: 2 nights at Furøy camping at Halsa in Meløy. We will stay in cabins, which are equipped with all needed kitchenware and bedclothes (incl. bath towel).
Equipment for the tour on the glacier: Crampons, ice-axe etc. will be provided by the tour-operator Rocks and river. It is also possible to use boots provided by them, but I strongly recommend you to invest in proper outdoor-boots.
Lunches: All lunches will be outdoor, so prepare and bring with you lunches, and something to drink, for all three days. We will do shopping in supermarkets in the evenings.
Wednesday
We will drive towards Meløy municipality and end up at Furøy camping in the evening. We will have some stops on the route. Arrival at Furøy c. 7 p.m.
Thursday
Start: Meet up at the car park 0900 (may be changed due to boat-trip)
A day on and at the glacier Engabreen. Take with you lunch and something to drink. Remember warm clothing and sunglasses (see textbox about clothing)!
Friday
Start: Meet up at the car park 0900
On the way back to Bodø we will have some stops on different localities.

Practical information
You need: notebook, pen/pencil, warm clothes as recommended on the glacier (see first page), extra set of dry clothes stored in waterproof plastic bag (just for safety), drinking cup box lunch, soft drink, sausages or hamburger to heat at open fire, sweets/chocolate. Take with you camera (stored waterproof), binoculars, and seating pad, if you have.

Geological field trip to the famous and beautiful beach Mjelle c. 20 km NE of Bodø town-centre. Both bedrocks and ongoing sedimentary process will be studied.

NOTE: Clothing
The coastal climate in Northern Norway is unpredictable. Temperatures varies between 6 - 20 0C, in worst cases down to 3-4 0C on the glacier. You have to expect precipitation and you will walk on uneven ground, incl. a glacier. We therefore recommend waterproof outdoor clothing and warm inner clothing (e.g. wool underwear and fleece or wool sweater). Mittens, a beanie, a day-walking sack, and sunglasses is required on a day-trip on the glacier. You also need ankle high light mountain boots that fits crampons. A thermos for hot drinks is warmly recommend, for our outdoor-lunches!
The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme coordinator. The evaluations form a part of the university's quality assurance system.
