Lectures about bird identification

KNOWLEDGE

The student has knowledge about:

  • Characteristics of the appearance of different taxonomic groups of birds, regardless of age, sex and seasonal variations
  • Characteristics of birds species appearance, regardless of age, sex and seasonal variations
  • Characteristics of the sounds of different taxonomic groups of birds, regardless of age, sex and seasonal variations
  • Characteristics of birds species sounds, regardless of age, sex and seasonal variations
  • Habitat selection and behavior in birds that are important for species identification
  • The most common bird species in the Western Palearctic region

SKILLS

The student can:

  • Determine the species of the most common birds in the field based on appearance and behaviour, regardless of age, sex and seasonal variations
  • Determine the species of the most common birds on the basis of song, and for some species also on the basis of contact sounds, warning sounds, alarm sounds or other types of sounds
  • Use habitat and geographical area as aids to assess the probability of whether the presumed species is correct

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student

  • Has knowledge of important digital resources about birds
  • Have trained their ability to detect and species determine birds in the wild

The competence that is documented through this study program will be useful for anyone who wants to work with bird knowledge for various purposes, in management, science, teaching and more.

The subjects may be included as part of teacher education or in a bachelor's degree. The courses may be approved in a relevant master's degree. There are individual regulations at the respective universities which at any given time determine the implementation of the course into a degree.

The subjects BID1005 and BID1006 provide the basis for proceeding with the subjects BID2001 Birds' appearance in the Western Palearctic, and BID2002 Birds' sounds in the West Palearctic.

There is no tuition fee for students within EU/EEA/ETFA.

The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme coordinator. The evaluations form a part of the university’s quality assurance system.
