Programme description

Make the right choice for the future: Choose a bachelor's degree in aquaculture management!

With this interdisciplinary education, you will stand out from the crowd through leading expertise in aquaculture biology, technology, economics and management. Here, the next generation of aquaculture managers will acquire the skills that are crucial to further develop the industry in a sustainable direction. The study provides a unique opportunity to connect theory and practice through a longer internship at a company of your choice. It is also arranged for international internship and exchange.

Career opportunities

The candidate qualifies for a broad range of positions within the aquaculture industry, depending on the their previous experiences. The study prepares the student for entering various management levels in aquaculture companies and organizations, to work in public administration, in the supplier industry for aquaculture equipment, and directly in the production of aquaculture organisms. The bachelor's degree also qualifies for further studies at master's level at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, provided the correct elective courses are passed.

Practical experience is a central part of this study programme, counting 22.5 ECTS credits. In the fourth semester, a 15 week internship must be carried out in a relevant aquaculture company. The internship course includes several mandatory elements such as assesment tasks, seminars and a final report. During the internship, the student participates in the day-to-day work in the company, engages in other tasks in addition, and thus gains relevant aquaculture experience.

If you want to combine your international period with international experience, internships can be carried out abroad. The aquaculture industry is an international industry, and many of our closest partner companies also have activities abroad. Denmark, Scotland, Canada and New Zealand are particularly relevant places to travel for international internships. The deadline for reporting to the international office is September 1.

A study abroad compliments your degree best in the sixth semester. It is also arranged for international internship in the fourth semester.

The programme qualifies candidates for applying for the MSc programme in Biosciences and Nordic Master (MARBIO) at Nord University, provided the applicant having taken a course in mathematics and statistics.

Knowledge

After completing the study, the candidate must have:

broad knowledge of current and central topics and methods used in the aquaculture industry.
basic knowledge of research and development related to aquaculture.
good and up-to-date knowledge within aquaculture biology, technology, economics and management.
in-depth knowledge of the aquaculture industry's history, nature and place in society.
broad knowledge of management theory, personnel policy and legal frameworks for working life.

Skills

After completing the study, the candidate must be able to:

apply professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work to practical and theoretical issues, and make reasoned choices.
reflect on own professional practice and adjust this under guidance.
find, evaluate and refer to quality-assured information, and present this in such a way that it adresses a problem.
master professional tools, techniques and forms of expression relevant to the aquaculture industry.

General competence

After completing the study, the candidate must:

have insight into professional and work ethical/legal issues associated with the aquaculture industry.
can plan and carry out varied tasks and projects that extend over time, in line with ethical requirements and guidelines for the aquaculture industry.
can present important information in aquaculture biology, technology, economics and management both in writing, orally and digitally.
can exchange views and experiences between different professions, and through this contribute to the development of best practice.
can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in the aquaculture industry

In addition to the semester fee and syllabus literature, students are expected to have a laptop with microphone and camera. Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in courses with laboratory exercises. This can be purchased at the university's bookstore Akademika (NOK 250-400).

Costs for excursions may apply, max NOK 2000,-.
