The course offers a master level introduction to Business Process Management (BPM).

Business processes represent an activity-based view on businesses and can be used on strategic and operational levels. Processes represent a system-based and holistic view on businesses (enterprises) and management.

The course discusses how enterprise models, including process models, can support improvement efforts. The models can be used to analyse present and future situations, and guide change of business models, services, processes, resources and technology. The course also discusses, how ICTs can be used to plan and realise process flows and cooperation internally and externally.

The course gives a coherent understanding of the relationship between services, processes and technology. The course discusses the need for business processes to be visible and explicit management objects.

Enterprise Architecture (EA) is introduced as a way for managers to address the technological foundation of an enterprise.

The course offers knowledge about how BPM can be used to provide a holistic view on relations between strategies, operational issues, person related processes, and the technological platform.

Knowledge:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have developed a thorough understanding of Business Process Management (BPM), be able to document business process architectures and understand the fundamental principles for using BPM to support governance and change of enterprises.

Students should also understand how ICT-based services could be used to support business processes, including knowledge of what Enterprise Architecture (EA) is. Students should, through work with cases and a practical project, be able to apply theory at an advanced beginner¿s level, and be able to reflect over their projects.

Skills:

Students will be able to

  • Develop and communicate a holistic process-based understanding of the enterprise
  • Master central concepts and problems concerning management of business processes
  • Develop enterprise models, including how to make strategy operational by developing / improving enterprise processes, information, architectural design and organization
  • Develop descriptions of enterprise models, including goal models and process models on various levels of detail
  • Understand how services, business processes and information systems are linked
  • Develop plans for business process governance and change
  • Understand how Enterprise Architecture can be used by managers to describe the technological fundament of the business

General competence

Students should have a good understanding of central issues of BPM, the relations between management and business processes and from a managers point of view be able to assess approaches to BPM and EA to align services, business processes and the IT platform.

Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Elective course
Lectures, seminars, cases, presentations by students, guest lecturers, group guidance.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
