See study programmeSocial Studies 2 consists of two courses, each worth 15 ECTS:
- SAM1017: Norwegian and International History
- SAM1018: Man, Nature and Society
The start of studies is normally in the first half of January.
The entire unit is counducted online with asynchronous and synchronous teaching sessions. Excursions, institutional visits and practical work can also be offered for those who have the opportunity to meet in Levanger.
The unit constitute a full-time study, and require active digital participation throughout the semester. Attendance is not compulsory, but each of the courses has work requirements that must be approved in order to be graded in the course. Social Studies 2 primarily aims to provide a good basis for teaching social studies in primary school. The study, in combination with Social Studies 1, will also be relevant for teaching subjects such as social studies, history and geography in upper secondary school. Methodological and didactic issues related to the three subject areas of geography, history and social studies will be central.
Knowledge
The student
- has knowledge of the rise of modern Norway from the 19th century both nationally and locally, with particular knowledge of the democratic development in this period
- has knowledge of key wars and international conflicts in the 20th century and up to the present day
- have knowledge of how war, conflict and genocide have challenged democracy and human rights
- have knowledge of how central international trends and actors have influenced Norway.
- has knowledge of history didactics and historical concepts, theory and methods and central didactic challenges related to teaching about this topic.
- has knowledge of basic geographical concepts such as place, space and scale and geography didactics
- has knowledge of interaction and conflict between climate, natural resources, land use, food production and living conditions nationally and internationally
- has knowledge of topics such as distribution, migration, demography, globalization and sustainable development, and how global, national and local processes work together
- has knowledge of sustainability didactics and challenges for achieving sustainable societies
Skills
The student
- can apply knowledge of the subject matter in independent analysis
- can connect the topic of the course with the school's democracy training
- can use and critically assess different types of sources, learning resources and didactic methods to stimulate students' awareness of history and understanding of historical change linked to the subject's subject matter

For admission to the study program generell studiekompetanse (general study qualification) is required. Applicants who do not have general study qualifications, and who are 25 years of age or older, can apply for admission on the basis of realkompetanse (real qualifications).
Semester fee and curriculum literature.
It is assumed that the students have their own laptop. For digital communication in the study, a webcam and headphones are included as part of the standard accessories. The students themselves must cover the costs for this.
